So I finally got to watching the musical and ended up drawing comparisons.
Musical >Gives every major character a subplot of some sort >Manages to make Pearl a 3D dimensional character with a character arc >Touches on Squidward's development from Band Geeks >Classic and dialogue based humor from the first three seasons >Spongebob actually comes out on top through his own perseverance and established actions
Movie >Really only features Spongebob, Patrick and Plankton, with Krabs frozen the entire movie and Squidward only getting one scene to himself >Starts the less endearing forms of humor we'd end up getting in later seasons, with Spongebob acting like a child and crying for no reason >Spongebob and Patrick never really come out on top through their own work; ultimately being saved by trailer jokes (Hasselhoff and Goofy Goober Rock) with the only exception being the tear of the goofy goobers
I still love the movie of course, but fuck the musical of all things blew it out of the water. It managed to keep the best of Spongebob humor while also conveying an emotional message and giving every character their chance on screen. What are Zig Forums's thoughts?
Dennis was probably my favorite part about the movie. A ruthless hitman voiced by Alec Baldwin and played completely straight as if from a different genre really made him stand out in a good way. Also the fact he was built up through most of the movie made him probably the most memorable of the three antagonists, despite being a henchman for one of them.
>I may not know what my thing is, but that's not going to stop me. When the going gets tough, this sponge gets going! I wish I had that kind of resolve.
As good as the musical is, I'm giving the movie a point because it's the only animated movie to my knowledge that consistently goes off-model. No matter how hard they try, live-action can't capture that zany visual energy
Aaron Nelson
Because of the flamboyancy in broadway.
Jaxson Allen
Because she's a mammal. Fish = White Mammals = Black Pearl is black, too.
Hunter Flores
Uhhh pearl was a fish.
Chase Green
>Implying whales are fish
Ethan Nguyen
They are, did you not see the mammals vs fish episode? Pearl wasn't exactly there to represent the land.
Alexander Collins
Afro == helmet
Thomas Gutierrez
Whales are Ungulates, like horses.
Jaxon Price
Whales are fish moron
Jaxon Lewis
>Pearl wasn't present in the mammals vs fish episode >So that means whales are fish >Despite Krabs talking about how he taught Pearl to breach (go to the surface to breathe air) in Season 2
Alexander Price
Spongebob and Patrick go on land for the entire first movie and breathe air, I guess that means they're not fish so the musical should have had a black bob and black pat.
Brayden Parker
The creator of Spongebob was a marine biologist and would be moaning in his grave if he knew his viewers thought whales had anything in common with horses.
Ian Murphy
They only go on land at the end and fucking die because of it, only getting resurrected because of water. Spongebob can't last in Sandy's treedome.
David Brown
Just giving an example of other Ungulata, user.
Joshua Evans
because muh representation and diversity or else the artist will be called racist.
Isaac Long
>are on land just fine until they dry out which takes long enough that they can run across the beach from the shack and stop to conversate This isn't even considering movie 2 where they are on land much longer. Whales also die if they're out of the water for a time. They're all fish dude. Seriously I'm fucking embarrassed to share a board with someone who puts whales in the same category as a horse and says they aren't fish.
Matthew Davis
For something to be a fish, it needs gills and to be cold blooded. Whales do not have gills, they have lungs, and they are warm blooded. They also produce milk, which fish do not.
