Jeez, the critics of Next Gen act like she killed somebody. She just did some reckless damage. You gotta remember she still lost her friend 7723, a lot like the Iron Giant. Difference is that the Iron Giant is all but confirmed to be alive, but 7723 doesn't remember Mai much at all. Even Mai admitted that she had anger issues, and why shouldn't she when all her classmate's smartphones beat her up?

I really liked the NextGen girl. She is angry as hell and on the road to become a whore or a murderer.

They're both shit but for different reasons. Mai is a horrible selfish cunt, who refuses to mature or grow. Luz is like a token that was given her own series. She's quirky, ditsy and speaks Spanish when the white writers feel like reminding us she's ethnic.

Protagonists tend to grow emotionally when a story of this nature happens. If no growth takes place at all, then the writers just wasted 90 minutes of everyone's time.

We need more characters like Anne who are proactive protagonists with their own set of strengths and weaknesses that allows them to build chemistry with other characters and have a clear character arc and development through their journey.

The issue with many female protagonists is that they often fall under the trappings of Captain Marvel (MCU version, don't know much of the comic counterpart) where they are written more so as power fantasies with either no flaws are flaws that the writers try to justify or feel surface level or they're like Mabel and Korra which have clear flaws and potential of development but for some reason either regress or stagnate.

The flaws I mentioned aren't just strictly found in female characters mind you, for the former a good male example is Rick Sanchez a character they claim to make an effort to show is horribly flawed but often times either the writers (probably Dan) either try to justify his actions or downplay them drastically. For the latter Mordecai is a good example since in the first season he's basically portrayed as "desperate manchild" and this aspect of his personality only gets more heightened and pathetic over the seasons. But these sort of traps I find is most common with female characters.

Anne isn't anything super special, it's just the basic hero's journey arc. But there's a reason that shit is still being taught to this day and it's because it works. She's simple but very effective and I think many writers could learn from that.
