Greetings true believers! It took me a bit longer than I would have liked but here is the second part of Paul Dini's run on Detective Comics. Last time we saw Riddler gone down the straight and narrow as a private detective, Penguin as the owner of a legit bar/lunge, and Joker as the same old psychopath as before. Also Poison Ivy showed up. Let's see what the next few issues hold for our Dark Knight.
Detective Dini Storytime
Huh. My first attempt at this thread was auto-detected as spam but adding in 'greetings true believers' fixed that right up. Weird.
Anyway, it seems like this might be the Catwoman issue.
!!!
Oh and I probably should have mentioned this earlier but if you missed part 1 of the storytime, don't worry about it. The reason I love Dini's run here so much is that it's just episodic standalone issues. There are a few characters that he introduces that show up multiple times, but you don't really lose much if you just read a given issue by itself.
I like this brief look into Bruce's various henchman personas. I'd read a Matches Malone ongoing.
Link the previous thread homeboy
ZZZ and the Italian midget tried to 'cheat' Penguin by hiring/kidnapping a stage magician and having him send an A/V relay to the big guy to win at poker. I still don't know how that's 'cheating' since if the Magician was playing instead of ZZZ it would have worked out the same but whatever.
Anyway, that's all in Detective Comics 824 if you're interested.
Or uh if that works. I thought threads from more than 3 days ago weren't archived anymore.
I wonder if this is a joke/jab at Marv Wolfman or just a cliche name for a villain.
This is probably my favorite 'new' character from Dini. I like just about everything he does with this iteration of Scarface.
If this storyline came out today I bet Wolfman would be used as a not-so-subtle stand in for those darn MRA comic fans (is MRA still a term that people use or has it all shifted to incel?).
Actually with Bruce talking about how competent and superior to the original this new Scarface is, I could very easily imagine this whole issue going much harder on the girl-power angle if it was written by a different person/in a different time. I'm glad it didn't though.
I'm not particularly knowledgeable when it comes to obscure characters, are either of these two villains/henchmen previously established characters? Like from some single issue back in the 60s or something?
Great panel work here.
Very intriguing.
Gross. I thought Timm was the pervert of the two.
And that's the end of Issue 827. I'm sure that we'll run into the Ventriloquist again, but not for a little while yet.
!!!!
Oh, haha nice gag.
If you are wondering who Matthew is and/or his relation to Bruce, check out the previous storytime as he featured prominently(well...) in the first issue of that.
You'll see that Eddie getting wrecked is a pretty common theme in this run. I wonder if Dini dislikes the character.
That outfit just looks so fucking dumb. Even for a batman villain.
