It's complicated. Furries have never been homogeneous enough to have a single take on everything, even before Zig Forums was founded, furries were already split apart and bickering with eachother on the morality and image furfaggotry(see: burned furs), there were definitely people who took their dumb fetish hobby seriously enough they thought they were persecuted but there were also those who were utter shithead trolls like everyone else. The former largely subsided when the internet as a whole bullied every scene kid, every emo and every otherkin autist to death by the end of the 00s.

They were everywhere back in the day and very annoying. Now they've weirdly become mainstream with a bunch of people considering themselves casual furries for being into stuff like Zootopia, Beastars, and BNA. Back in middle school I used to draw cat people superheroes. Probably just a TMNT knockoff in hindsight. Also their enemy was a Dr Doom and Cobra Commander knockoff. Plus I used to watch Disney's Robin Hood and the Sonic Sat AM show and read the Sonic comics. I'd be up for doing a fursuit if I ever got into cosplay again. A friend actually bought a head and paws last year. He's been wearing it around outside going to work and to get food during the pandemic. He's essential personnel so he still has to go to work and it's just a goofy thing to do to make people smile. Though now that it's summer I doubt he is still doing it.
