As a southerner who fucking hates the confederacy and what it's done to our reputation, this book was fucking great. Satirizes that intrabellum aristocratic attitude without ignoring the few upsides it DID have. Stuart might be a racist asshole, but he's sworn to protect his descendants and he never even considers abandoning that oath because it happens to apply to a black man.
Stuart Jr.'s attitude is pretty good, too - mixture of justified outrage and resigned acceptance

This would make a pretty good movie.

It's not really that great of a book, but I like how it shows that all of the tank crew is bigoted in some way.

In the early 00's, writer Kurt Busiek, of Astro City fame, was given the greenlight to launch a passion project he had dreamed of for years, The Power Company. A team of superpowered mercenaries who organized their business like a law firm, sometimes working for wealthy clients, other times doing "pro bono" work for a good cause. The team's membership consisted of a combination of new characters and some of Busiek's forgotten favorites.

Unfortunately, like most new superhero teams, the book struggled to gain sales traction. In order to attract more attention, Busiek came up with a plan to add a fan favorite superhero to the team's roster. DC's marketing people convinced him to let them create an online poll where they could vote on who should be the new member of the team. They assured him that since the superhero he had chosen was the only fan favorite among the candidates available, he was sure to win the poll handily.

Of course, the Internet being what it is, the fan favorite superhero Busiek had chosen, Firestorm, was defeated by the Haunted Tank, who had only been included as an option on the poll as a joke. Busiek had always been upfront with readers that the poll was bogus. But nevertheless, he honored its outcome. Firestorm joined the team in issue #11, and a new Haunted Tank joined in issue #15. The ghost of World War 2 hero Jeb Stuart guided his grandaughter Jen Stuart, who piloted a futuristic hover-tank.

Firestorm's inclusion in the book had not raised sales as much as Busiek had hoped, and The Power Company was cancelled with issue #18.

Busiek's that big of a fanboy he thought FIRESTORM of all people would mean more sales on the book?

In context, I could see how he thought that. There was lots of complaining from Firestorm fans on the official DC message boards at the time about how the character wasn't being used in anything. The internet was still young at this point, and people still hadn't quite figured out that the loudest internet voices tend to be vocal minorities.
