Why is Aquaman so cool while Namor is just edgelord garbage?

Been a Aquaman and Namor fan for years, I could honestly say that Aquaman is a good character but he's always been playing catch up to Namor. Namor is the first aquatic superhero and really set the standard for others to follow. I mean Geoff really introduce a lot Namor's personality to Aquaman in his run. Such as Arthur being quick to anger and leaving for the ocean pissed off at humanity when he was a teenager and his father passing away. Before movie Aquaman who's more in line with Thor Bro, Aquaman was the pissed off guy in 52 JL, even chocking out Batman.

I'll give Aquaman this, he does have a better villain, love life and powers (which Namor once had but was either dropped or forgotten). I also remember when Aquaman was edgy. Though believe or not it wasn't when he had a hook hand. Peter David wrote a lot jokes in it and made it light hearted even with 90's grim dark art. That is one thing I feel Aquaman did write and 90s early 2000s Namor tried to copy is David's whole mystical history of Atlantis.

Namor has sold less than Aqualad.

Namor has sold less than Black Manta.

And, of course, Namor has sold less than AQUA-THE-MAN.

How exactly does Aquaman need to catch up with such a failure?

Hey there Tommy. Aquaman will always play catch up due to Namor always doing everything Aquaman first. Atlantis attacks? Namor. Losing their throne to a super villain? Namor. Aquaman's uneasy feelings toward humans and lone wolf thinking you see even in JL movie and his movie? Namor.

I'll give Aquaman this that he did which I haven't seen in Namor, San Diego sinking into the ocean and Aquaman becoming protector over them. Which for all its cheesy-ness I really did like Aquaman Sub-Diego run. What are your favorite Aquaman runs Tommy?

Going to have to see those sources Tommy. You're comparing Black Manta and Ocean Master who never had their own comics, Aqualad who only appears in Teen Titans when not in Aqua-titles and Mera recent short solo run only lasted 6 issues I think, which by the way both Mera and Aqualad were reintroduced after years of being in limbo. You're going to sit there and try to compare them to Namor who have sold comics for decades. 2010 Namor had his First Mutant book which ran for 11 issues and an annual, given the numbers chances are he pretty much out sold Mera in one of his weakest runs.

Namor has been selling comics in those past 10 years, from being in the X-men books, to being in the Defender, Illumanti books to headlining the recent Invaders title. Why does Namor not have his own comic? Probably the same reason why they slashed X-Men titles and Fantastic Four books because they were part of Fox. I think once MCU get their notes together on what they want to do with Namor, you see him with his own title. Till then, they're setting him up to new readers.

I don't know that it was. Aquaman was treated as a joke, sure, but Namor wasn't in the public conscious at all. Nobody except the boominest of boomers knew who he was, and that trend has continued into the modern day. Ironically Aquaman being seen as pathetic for so long helped keep him relevant.

So Aquaman in Peter David's run was raised by dolphins due to being left to die in Mercy Reef due to his blonde hair being a sign of evil magic. His dolphin mother was called Porm and they use to call him Swimmer or Two-legs. Well Aquaman was getting older and had a crush on Nera the dolphin, Porm had to keep telling Aquaman they can't be together and he should let Nera be with a jock/bully male dolphin that use to pick fights with Aquaman.

Finally Porm told him he needs to go to Man's world and he is found by Curry the lighthouse keeper due to Aquaman messing with his traps. Fast forward years later when Aquaman has his hook hand, he breaks in to a Seaworld type park and rescues Nera in a film noir type story.

I give it to Geoff Johns for making Mera popular with readers. Before him, she was like any other DC silver age female supporting character. It was only when Aqua baby died did she go crazy and become a villain who hated her husband. She died and then came back to only walk in Aquaman and Dolphin together in bed.

Eastwood was 15 years before the baby boom and Depp 15 years after.

People forget that after Peter David both Larsen and Jurgens worked to fix the Mera/Arthur but then Joe Kelly fucked the pairing again with his storyline The Obsidian Age
