FX did some sort of chronological Patty & Selma marathon a few weeks ago, and upon seeing that episode after a string of solid 1990s episodes, it occurred to me that a big problem with le zombie simpsons isn't so much the writing (though there were plenty of duds), it's that the delivery, timing and exeuction of the gags feels completely phoned in. Like that bit where Selma lies about loving Homer and it cuts to him shuddering at the plant cafeteria feels like a gag that would have been at home in a season 5 episode, but the execution was very "mechanical" and lifeless.
