This. Frank seemed like a good kid, and his father scolded and humiliated him for petty reasons.

Big Bill was a docuhe to Frank almost all throughout his childhood. There's trying to help your kid into adulthood, and then there's Big Bill. It doesn't make anything Frank does excusable this season, but seeing Frank knock him in the face was very rewarding ngl.

Imagine thinking hitting your kid with a crutch because his music was slightly too loud.
And also being such a threatening force on your family that they’re walking on egg shells every time they talk to you.

It's a pretty shitty living situation.

This is the part that gets me. He was a working man who had the weight of the world on his shoulders like anybody else, and obviously the Polio thing really crapped out. But even before that he wasn't some pathetic slob working 12 hours only to come home to bratty kids and a bitchy wife. He had his own successful business, he was the talk of the town, everybody thought he was the Man of the Hour, even 30 years after the fact. So he goes home and a drink gets spilled and he blows his asshole out with rage. The fuck is that about?

Guy had some legitimate mental issues. Said all he wanted was an "attaboy" from his family. Well that comes down to chicken or the egg for me. His wife doesn't get his jokes, maybe it came from him being such a dick. Frank obviously adored him until he abused him time and again. He starts cracking jokes during the play and then makes him walk home because he "embarrassed" him. Really what it was is he had such a fragile ego, such a deep rooted fear of not being beloved by all, that he blew up at the people he thought threatened that the most: his family. Like I said, real mental issues.
