What emotional appeal? Aside from that one episode with Brian and the old woman, literally every other "sentimental" scene was a generic sitcom moment or subverted for laughs.

It was played for a gay about Brian messing shit up for Quagmire like his niece with cancer

Reminder that Family Guy has greatly improved over the last few years. 2011-2015 were the dark ages of Family Guy since many of the worst episodes were from that era (Seahorse Seashell Party, Brenda Q, Life of Brian, Brian gives Stewie Herpes, Stewie becomes pregnant) etc.. Not to mention that Cleveland was gone, meaning that Peter's group didn't have a straight-man.

However, it's funny as fuck now. It's full of witty jokes, meme humor, interesting plots and funny cutaways.

my biggest take away from family guy was that it was about 5 minutes of an actual a plot, 5 minutes of a b plot. And 12 minutes of stalling for time it cut away gags.

Exactly. An abusive relationship can involve so much psychological terror and literal threats to your life that it takes total ignorance and/or total lack of empathy to stick up your nose and say "just leave." Instead of sympathizing with how difficult leaving an abusive relationship could be, the episode chastised victims for being weak-willed. How not a single person working on that episode brought up how fucked up it was is beyond me.

And all the jokes about the exaggerated way Brenda makes excuses for Jeff are pretty bad. When they write Brenda to say "You don't see how soft and gentle he hits me when we're alone" it's not a joke at Jeff's expense. It's a joke at Brenda's expense. Brenda is the butt of the joke. We're supposed to laugh at how Brenda is so submissive and broken that she'll talk about being beaten as if it's romantic.

Not all people in that situation are victims, some are just genuinely stupid or prefer to deal with abuse because it comes with lots of benefits
