There hasn't been a pandemic like this in recent memory, so never. Now that there is, basic sanitation like mask wearing is a logical and reasonable measure to take.

The idea of masks is to lessen spread to other people. While the virus can pass through the material, it still relies on airflow to carry it person to person. A test for masks is to see if you can blow out a match or candle while wearing it.

Seems the problem with masks is it's more to protect other people instead of yourself and assumes you may already have the virus and don't know it yet. Things that oppose the 'every man for himself' mindset of some people.

Because the myth doesn't live on any factual basis, but on the benefits that opportunists get from making people believe in it.

It's not a flu, as it's not a strain of influenza. It's a coronavirus, and it's many times more likely to kill you than the flu. So yes, mask wearing is a logical and reasonable public health response that relies on as many people as possible wearing masks to prevent the spread of the virus, and to protect yourself. This isn't a matter of personally believing whether sanitation works; it does. It's a matter of thinking you have the right to act as a disease vector; you do not.
