People are super touchy nowadays so there's less you can actually write about without them throwing a tantrum over it which is always a headache. The real angsty stuff. They want instant gratification usually. The easiest thing is just to write something cute about a couple or some smut.

Not really, even yaoi/yuri stories from the 2000 at the least tried to follow canon and keep the characters in character, and some could be good. These days most try to re-imagine everything through the lenses of their favorites opnions of who they should be. The famous "This is my favorite character, now let me put they on cloths they would never wear and talk/act on a way they never would, but they're my favorite character".

That's about it, when it comes to AU's there were usually alignment changes or theme changes, now it's mostly the characters being put in a SOL Sitcom or Hipster Coffeeshop.
The cringe of the past was either really good or so bad it's funny.
