The industry already struggles keeping veterans on because studios desperately do not want to pay their union rates, so it's become very common practice for long-time people to be let go in favor of new, cheaper, young blood who don't know what their worth. They frequently hide behind the barrier of, "We want new talent" when they actually want cheap talent.
A big reason why 2D animated films died is because CG animators don't have the same union rates so they were able to get away with hiring bigger crews for a CG production for the same price as a smaller 2D team. It's a big reason why all those 2D veterans lost their jobs basically over night.
