Right now it seems like there's good debate about whether she or Tendi is better, with most people leaning Tendi at the moment, but knowing how these shows have gone in recent years I feel like Mariner or Tendi is going to do something (or multiple things) that get the board to turn on one of them. Feel like it's gonna be Mariner at the moment but we haven't really seen enough of Tendi yet for me to be totally sure.

She is basically a girl whose parents are both high-ranking in Starfleet who pushed her to be an overachiver, and at some point was like "screw this responsability shit, Lower Deck is where the fun really is at", she also had issues with some of Starfleet's regulation that she perceived as more harmful for the population.

You should expect the chief medical officer to be extremely competent. A young ensign being this good is exceptional but Mariner tends to succeed despite herself. For example when the spider was chasing her and Boimler she got three full sentences out, then as soon as he responds the spider closes in on them, but it’s framed as being his fault.

I’m interested to see if she keeps the bright eyed view of being in Star fleet or gets ground down by the perils of serving.

Her mistake turned out to be the right thing to do in the end. Ignoring regulations and giving farm tools away led to the discovery of the cure for the rage-virus. Granted, that was only the first episode but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the general way of how the rest will play out.
The only negative thing she did that didn't have a net positive was cutting into the other ensign at the beginning with the Bat'leth, but since it was played off as a joke with not consequence I guess one can just dismiss it.

She is hypercompetent in episode 1.
