Recently I rewatched Batman Begins, so let's have a Nolan thread. When this film first came out what were the opinions on "Batman was trained by ninjas"?

>Everyone says that about [Christopher Nolan’s] Batman Begins. "Batman’s dark." I’m like, okay, "No, Batman’s cool." He gets to go to a Tibetan monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesn’t, like, get raped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, that’s how that would go.

people probably thought it was dumb
but speaking of the nolan movies
i really hate how they actually bothered to make gotham a shithole for begins but just did "generic american city" for the other two movies
also TDKR sucks

who else is going to train batman?

The Joker

>people probably thought it was dumb
I'm not sure why people would feel that way. At this point, it's so natural for people to call him a ninja. He dresses in black getup, skulks in the shadows and throws ninja stars (batarangs).

Yeah but actual ninjas? That was just weird.

consider this
nowadays him being trained by ninjas would be taken as fact
but at the time the schumacher movies probably just gave people this idea that batman should be more lighthearted and just adding ninjas might've felt like a weird turn at the time

BTAS did it

I fell asleep watching that movie

I know right were the fuck were the quips.

I was in high school and just getting into comics before it came out. I thought the whole thing was cool. I really, particularly liked the way they did Scarecrow and the casting of Cillian Murphy. I thought the Joker card at the end of the movie was extremely exciting.

A Batman who went to prison to be trained by rapists?

The generic american city is a shit hole though, every city just insists other cities are bigger shit holes and ignores the shit they do to bring each other down, like one city sending busses full of homeless to another city to get rid of them

Same. I was 13 and despite never having any interest in superheroes or comics the trailer for this movie got me super excited. I was so pumped for the movie that I bought and read Year One the night before it came out. When they did the Joker card at the end I just about came in my pants.

Made sense to me. Batman has a thing for stealth and infiltration.

The League of Assassins is literally a group of ninjas in the comics, user.

I want to say I remember the general reception of Begins being 'pleasantly surprised' but I could be wrong. I remember being personally excited that Scarecrow was getting top billing as villain.

Bruce training with Ra's should be a regular canon thing
I love how he took the gauntlet design from them

What I remember is people either knew who the League of Shadows was and thought it was cool or just didn't know shit or really care about Batman and didn't give a fuck. Ken Watanabe being Ra's Al Ghul was bigger "controversy" among fans before the movie came out.

Man, I think I was in elementary back in 05. I remember thinking the suit was the hypest shit though.

I was going in remembering everything from Batman TAS. So I was seriously expecting him to come back and not just his daughter.

the nolan films should have followed this script

Batman might as well have been trained by Amazons at this point. Dude just runs into rooms full of people and beats up like 30 of them all at once with his fancy martial arts and leaves.

These usually make me chuckle, but holy shit, is this one bad.

>These usually make me chuckle, but holy shit, is this one bad.
shit taste

How come?

HEY LETS MAKE A BATMAN MOVIE BUT WITH IRON FIST'S ORIGIN STORY

Ras al Ghul being Bruce's mentor both makes sense(where else would he have learned so many crazy skills) and also gives al Ghul a reason to be so obsessed with grooming Bruce to be his son-in-law and successor.

Wait, who were Bruce's teachers again? I know he spent some time briefly with Giovanni Zatara learning art of escaping

pretty sure this is the original "made a bot create a script"

I agree. Gotham did remain a shithole, but it stopped being a dark stylized shithole and just looked like every other movie at the time in Dark Knight and Rises.
