Was it true that Lilo & Stitch was made as an answer to Pokemon? Why didn't it catch on?

It copied Pokemon at surface level, large amount of collectible monsters, and stopped there. It's also too western-ized. Half of the appeal of Pokemon is it being a distinctly Japanese product.

The movie didn't but the series was a blatant pokemon rip off.

Makes sense, experiments aren't really generic fighting mons and more about utility. it'd be hard to translate that into a game.

I don't remember caring or even knowing Pokemon was a Japanese product. I liked the competitive aspect. Training fighting and winning. The collectible aspect is only part of Pokemon, but the entirety of Lilo & Stitch.

>Why didn't it catch on?
Stitch continues to be one of their central merchandising characters so it didn't "fail" in the slightest

did it have a crossover with digimon wtf

No, it's from the Stitch! anime. One of the many dumb things they've added (like actual spirits)

I think because at it's core Pokemon is alot more personal than Lilo and Stitch could ever be.

Sure the anime focuses on Ash but for better or worst the game character is pretty much "you" so when you catch a sneasel it's yours.

Since when Sitch and Lilo was a pokemon ripoff?

I fail to see how the show is a supposed to be a pokemon rip-off. A lot of the episodes felt more like monster-of-the-week kind of show than catching monsters and fighting with them in some tournament.

Right
Pokemon is about getting the lads together to accomplish a goal
There is a 100% completion aspect but you are most likely going to end up using your favorite mom's most of the time

Stitch sticks out so fucking much omg

Wait what

>Half of the appeal of Pokemon is it being a distinctly Japanese product.
You're full of shit.

I remember some anons saying that it was basically made to compete with the rising popularity of pikachu.

it probably was but the people behind it were far too creative that it missed the point and made a classic.
You can argue in the 2nd movie where they actually show the other experiments and the tv show was made exclusively for finding the new experiments.

I forgot this was even a thing

Is it really bad or was the hate just kneejerk reaction?

it's just a soulless cash cow for the chinese market, i liked the anime more since atleast that had it's moments.

I can't handle the new VAs they got, they're too distinct to replace so it's not their fault I know, but still.
