The way people react to the word nigger has changed a lot over the year. At the time that was written, it would have been more accepted as she was making a comparison between racism and the form of prejudice she was facing. Most people would recognize that the point was 'bigotry is bad'. As another example I remember when you could report on someone else saying the word nigger, and actually use the word instead of using the euphemism "the N word". People understood that you were just saying that somebody else said that word and didn't get bent out of shape about it. Nowadays it is only ever acceptable coming out of a white person's mouth using the N word euphemism, which if you think about it is weird because we all know what word it's referring to and think of that word when we hear the euphemism.
