OK real talk, I don't know that much about military protocol, but if this actually happened, the missiles would not get launched, right?

It's exactly like this. Though now a days, it's streamline to a red button. It doesn't matter where it goes, just as long as it launches and hits somewhere.

They would have been, the crew probably didn't realize that a different person was yelling at them. Mansley's ass would have been fertilizer after the incident though.

The situation was pretty unprecedented and the general did tell them to prime the missile and wait his command to launch. Given the situation, if they heard someone scream "LUNCH DA MESSAL NAO!", it's not like they'd pause and go "Are you sure?"

GIANT THE MAN, WHERE'SLEY?!?!?!

THAT MISSILE IS TARGETED AT THE GIANT'S CURRENT POSITION. WHERE'S THE GIANT MANSLEY?

MHERES WHE TIANT, GANSLEY?

As far as I know there's never been an actual combat situation where a primed nuke is standing by for someone to push an actual button. There's a reason it normally takes direct order from the President to even have launching a nuke be on the table since even low yield bombs are city busters and thus can equal thousands if not millions dead in the long run, not to mention the chance it triggers a full blown nuclear war. You dont want to keep your instant genocide weapons on a hair trigger, for any reason

Well technically there was the Soviet Sub being hit with depth charges during Cuba. It had to be like a landslide vote between the three commanding officers of the sub to launch their nukes at the US Navy above. If one man said no and was firm, then no missile would be launched.

That was, was Vasily Arkhipov. And he's one of the few people during that time that kept a cool head, and made sure the clock did not hit Midnight during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

this was in the 1950s so it could have been possible protocol wasn't that watertight yet

god I wanted to bone hogarth's mom SO BAD

Don't forget Stanislav Petrov. He was in charge of Soviet air defense when their system blared that America just launched five nukes. Protocol said he was to instantly call Moscow so they could retaliate, but dude kept a cool head and reasoned just five nukes seemed weird. He was right, as it turned out to be a false alarm from sunlight hitting some clouds and fooling the satellite.

For not killing the world as we know it, he was demoted and sworn to secrecy, because he didn't do his job as instructed. Soviet Russia was FUCKED

WHERE'S THE MANSLEY, GIANT???

>broke chain of command to launch a nuclear missile to detonate on American soil
Would he even get a trial? Shit like that seems like the stuff they take you out back and blow your brains out for

no. only within the bounds of cartoon logic.

movie is great, but the Giant could have easily used his laser vision to blast the missile out of the sky, thus proving that yes he Is a gun, but a good gun.

He looks like a kid diddler

TRIPS! WHERES THE GIANT?

THE GIANT MANSLEY’S; WHERE?

Sir this is a Wendy's

Oh hell no, the conspiracies would be rampant and awful enough if he DID get a trial. If he was killed without trial, it might cause enough civil unrest to cause a full on uprising. No, he would be put on the most public, most flagellant trial in the history of the world, and an exact chain of events would be put into the public eye to demonstrate just how a fuckup like this could have happened, because otherwise the conspiracy theories will go absolutely hog wild and nothing will be able to stop them, because a nuke on American soil is a pretty damning piece of evidence that can be retrofitted to practically any wild speculation.

All that said, this is true, and I don't think this situation could possibly happen even in the case of a giant, potentially destructive robot. Governments are not known for acting fast.

There are two reasons why The Giant's solution is better:
1. it means that both potentially-catastrophic problems are off the table at once. Even if The Giant was peaceful, the populace is probably more at ease with the semi-sentient superweapon dismantled. Besides, if he'd used lasers to take down the nukes, that would have been seen as a display of power and dominance, which would have scared even more people into wanting him gone.
2. there's an implication that he survived the nukes anyway, and a miraculous rebirth after sacrificing himself to save people from their own folly is a much better, more sympathetic story than just taking them down with superior firepower. Also it has biblical connotations which would help too.

THAT MISS IS TARGETED TO THE THREADS CURRENT POSITION!
WHERE'S THE THREAD OP!?

WHERE'S THE MANSLEY, MISSILE?

Yes yes I'm aware of the famous occurance but my point was they were left to act without the need for a second command. In both these situations there was an enemy and people were ordered to be ready to launch nukes

maybe the real giant was the friends we made along the way

I think given the time period and the complete state of fuck everything on the ground was (superweapon going rampant kicking ass and killing everything), and that state of fuck also being the last known state of the ground troops by the ship, this could have happened.
The ship knows shit is going bad and has been given authorization to make the nukes hot and get ready to shoot (because everything is fucked). All he needs is the verification, which he gets (general or not). Could even reason that the general's position was just compromised or he was just killed and someone else grabbed it to fire the missile, its not like the operators have view on the situation down there. Which is probably why they slammed the missile button without hesiation.

THIS FUCKING VIDEO

God those threads were kino and what a rabbit hole I had found through them.

Thinking about it from the perspective of the ship the situation seems way more fucking chaotic at that point.

>"Fire on the Robot!"
>????????
>"NOW DAMMIT NOW!"

I'd be terrified.

Speaking of missiles, anyone here watched Threads?
