ITT: Obscure Zig Forumsntent

Post obscure Zig Forumsntent that rarely, if ever, gets discussed or mentioned. I'll start by mentioning pic related, "Once A Hero" was a tv show that aired on ABC in the late 80's. It was effectively the Roger Rabbit of capeshit. In the show we follow a misfortunate comic book artist who's long running title "Captain Justice" gets shitcanned. On the flipside, Captain Justice (and his other comic book buddies, one of which is akin to an amalgam of the spectre and the question) realize their world is coming to an end and Captain Justice races into the real world to save them.

Like most kids, I liked everything. But that movie was probably the first one that made me think "Wow, this movie sucks!"

During it's initial airing, the series was accompanied by a Marvel Comics tie in book of the same name. I suggest reading the book over watching the show as it tells the story in a much more effective manner. The show itself is very cheesy and at times comes off as parody.

Huh... I could've sworn this was a Ditko cover.

As, almost every non cape comics?
How about those comics commisioned for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America?

How about the ups and downs of mythical anthology magazines like Fierro, El Cairo or El Víbora?

Elaborate, both of these sound very interesting user

"Bob" was another tv show from around the same time. The show itself focused on the life of a successful comic book writer. The comics based on the show however are an entirely different story. In the show we're just told Bob's character "Mad Dog" got updated into some over the top extreme 90's incarnation. The comics by marvel showcase that, each issue has a silver age mad dog story in the front, and a dark age mad dog story in the back. Evan Dorkin did most of the art.

On the 500th anniversary of the discovery od America, Grupo Planeta commisioned a series of books "Relatos del nevo mundo" about the encounter of both words to top level artists.

Those anthology magazines show the era of exploration and discovery of newfound freedom after lead years; with diferences like Fierro showing the argentinian return of democracy and the postscipt of the Falklands war; El Cairo and El Víbora showing the dicotomy Madrid/Barcelona of el destape.

"Hit Series" my foot!

The entire cast (except for Bob Newhart) were fired after the first season and the second season only lasted a few months.
It was Newhart's least successful (and least funny) show.

This lousy 2nd attempt was for

Sounds badass

Funnily enough I only know the guy cause of this show

I cant blame you, seems like the kind of thing he'd work on. Considering most of his work by that point was freelance commercial junk for Marvel and DC. I own most of his Star Comics titles out of sheer respect for the man.

Not enough love for Combo Man.

It's baffling that combo man isn't more well known. He's up there with other commercial comics greats like the DC KFC books or captain citrus if you ask me.

>cutesy art
>is actually about drugs and sexual abuse

In the 70's, Filmation made an attempt to put together a show starring the most famous sunday funnies. The farthest they got was a single pilot episode that didn't seem to go very far. Aside from Archie, the show featured Alley Oop, Gretchen, Iggy, and Ignatz Mouse to name a few. For those interested look up "Fabulous Funnies 1978" on youtube.

Oof I remember this all too well. DC was a in a very strange place in the late 70's. It's as if the old management was trying to keep things kid friendly and huggable while their stable of creators kept pushing things further and further into real world grit and grime.

>the late 70's
It was 1986

Sounds like prime Bronze Age of Comics.

Shit my sense of time is totally fucked

I thought I was the only one who remembered this mess. Here, have James Cameron's Cybersix rip off in return.

Kirby guest started!

bump

isn't the letter section full of little girls crying that they bought the comic expecting something cute and got such hard shit.

I only saw one episode and it was embarrassingly bad.

If "the guy" is Newhart, watch his Psychiatrist-in-Chicago show.
Classic!!!
