I like his more detailed ligne claire style, it's unique amongst the prevelant herge inspired styles of franco-belgian comics at the time

uhh, yeah what this user said

The details are my favorite part of his style.

He was too based for this gay earth.

I think one of the things that really helps is that his stuff has color, if this was just black and white it'd be no where near as interesting.

Did Moebius direct the ending short in Heavy Metal with Taarna? The style is very similar.

What are you talking about? Most of my favorite stuff of his is black and white.

yes

it just seems wild to me how moebius could just draw the stuff he did without any sort of sketching first. i mean i guess he did sometimes but other times he could just sit down and do something like without much preparation

What would be a recommendation to start with Moebius? I read Nausica recently and rather loved it, and heard that the Miyazaki may have taken inspiration from Moebius and now I’m interested.

this would be an awesome dwarf city, like cool dwarves who like seeing the sun but don't want to leave their mines

I think he admitted he did. There's even Miyazaki Moebius art book. But if you're in it purely for the art read Airtight Garage or World of Edena. If you want something with more story read The Incal.

Your life will be better if you read Blueberry.

Are they all part of one larger story or are they all self contained? Also I’d believe they are connected based solely on how Ponyo was said to be a mash up of Little Mermaid and some story by a Japanese writer essentially.

I really like his sketches. They've got so much life in them it's insane. I'd really like to get my hands on the Arzach sequel, the Airtight Garage sequels (there's a lot) and a bunch of his untranslated shorts and published sketchbooks.
What Moebius is known for is his art and the sense of wonder it evokes. There is no one else like him in the realm of sequential art. The actual writing in his comics isn't great. It would arguably be better if all his comics were silent like Arzach.
Check out The World of Edena (to see his evolution), The Airtight Garage (a good showcase of his different styles), and 40 Days in the Desert B (to see him go crazy). Arzach is a series of silent comics, with the exception of a short comic explaining the character, story and world, and full narrative sequel that hasn't been translated as far as I know. The Incal, written by Jodorowsky, is decent, and there is also The Long Tomorrow, a short written by Dan O'Bannon (co-writer of Alien and other sci-fi, also did special effects and directed movies).
Apparently, The World of Edena and the Major Grubert stories (Airtight Garage) take place in the same universe. Also loosely connected is the pornographic comic, The Horny Goof.

I always liked the art for this. Sadly never read it

What are the best sci fi comics beside goatbius?

Really love his concept art sketches.
His Tron stuff is fantastic.

Airtight Garage and World of Edena are self contained books while The Incal is one story told through 6 graphic novels. Edena is a good start if you want to get a feel for Moebius but if you want more of a story go for the The Incal.

I've come to accept that I'll never read most of his work.

Reminder that Incal is part of the Jodoverse and you need to read Metabarons and Technopriests too, even if they weren't made by Moebius.
