Why are there no guns in the Avatar world? Even the 10th century Chinese had gun like weapons, which were bamboo/metal tubes that shot out fire and shrapnel. Avatar even had normal cannons, submarines with missiles, bombs, and even a fucking laser cannon, yet no one made something like all of that but hand held? Aside from Avatar being a kid’s fantasy action cartoon, what would be a strong lore reason for why there are no guns (yet), and what would be a good way to introduce them if you had to?

Earthbenders are literal organic guns

Bending is enough.

As for how to introduce them, I imagine that somebody could accidentally create them by trying to make physical mechanisms to imitate bending.

Non benders trying to get an edge on normal benders seems like the most reasonable thing to happen. After all, isn’t a huge majority of the Earth Kingdom non bender? But that still leaves the question of why non benders haven’t invented guns yet, a pro bender conspiracy?

>giant drill
>steam engine trains
>forklifts

>no gunpowder

Guns are on the No no list
Even if the show runners werent averse themselves the network would probably take issue
Especially in an action cartoon

>But that still leaves the question of why non benders haven’t invented guns yet
Because nobody thought to invent gunpowder. Because for whatever reason one would create gunpowder, there was a roll that could be filled in for it's usage with bending.

Is that a perfect explanation? maybe not. But it's something.

Cause the creators are hacks, obviously.

>no gunpowder
Then what the hell are they using to make these fireworks??

I'm pretty sure they had fireworks in the avatar universe.

Also imagine trying to use a gun on a bender, who could easily deflect, redirect, or flat out metal bend the bullet.

Not everyone is a bender and not all of them can metalbend
Even then think of it as trying to catch a bullet with your bare hands

>easily
Bullets go really fucking fast, and most benders are kind of trash. The show only focuses on top tier benders.

>Why are there no guns in the Avatar world?
Gun was invented but it was supressed because it'd make bending obsolete.

The real answer is that it's a kids show.

Airbenders are all dead and were pacifist. Waterbenders lack the engineering skill and resources. Firebenders have the knowledge and resources to invent guns, but the fire nation seems to put benders as an upper class. They probably don't want to bring the commoners up to the level of their betters. Earth benders could do it, and have good reason to, but the earth kingdom is characterised as being stuck in its ways to a fault. Plus the Dai Li probably wouldn't like it.

>Makes Bending obsolete
It really doesn't but it does equalize the playing field in combat and warfare.

>Even the 10th century Chinese had gun like weapons, which were bamboo/metal tubes that shot out fire and shrapnel
OK but they were not very widespread or useful and were basically gimmicks, and they would be completely worthless next to firebending. Gunpowder would probably not be invented in the Avatar world. No one would have any reason to do so.

Imagine a world where people have complex combustion engines due to magic, and ask why no one has invented a simple steam engine yet. Aside from just the fact that day to day technology is all run by the combustion engines, it would be in the best interest of the government and the people who are rich off the patent off the combustion engine to control the means to produce that engine, and stop people from conducting research that would lead to its duplication.

>Makes Bending obsolete
It does in the most important way. You cant assert dominance with healing, building, flying, generating power, etc. I dont mean to sound edgy but you can only ruin with a threat of violence.

There's lots of reasons why it makes sense there's no guns in ATLA, but there's no excuse for Korra

I think its reasonable to assume elemental bending would have a significant influence on what does and doesn't get invented. Not to mention the action is all very martial and guns would only ruin that. Finally, its a kids show

by martial I meant to say martial arts based

>"I dont mean to sound edgy but you can only RULE with a threat of violence."
Sorry spelling.

Benders can just as easily use guns, with the addition of their bending which can be used in ways that greatly assist combat.
And that's just grunts, high tier benders are still outclassing average gun men especially since it's a kung fu show.

dumb

>you can't assert dominance with control over natural resources

You're putting the cart before the horse. That simple steam engine would require significant amounts of technical development, alongside attending infrastructure development, before it could even begin to compete with a magical combustion engine. Economics work against the development of the steam engines in this scenario.

If anything, the development of firearms would be inverted in the Avatar universe. Rather than being mass volley weapons and siege engines, you'd probably see firearms immediately go for portability and concealment. The one place where you'd see firearms development parallel the real world would be naval guns.

They never needed them. Why have a machine that fires projectiles when you fire projectiles? Guns are a weapon that a disgruntled Equalist would try to invent.

You just mad because people think your weird for sticking your dick down the barrel of a gun and shooting off loads in it.

That's true for just about any fantasy world. Firearms irrevocably tip the balance of power away from magic users. There's a Harry Potter copypasta about it.

They have fireworks and literal WW1 dogfighting planes they drop bombs out of. Wonder what's in the bombs? Maybe it's concentrated bending? Maybe it's my patience? Who knows.

I think gunpowder to them is like the wheel to aztecs and inca. They knew what it was, they just didn't see it as completely revolutionary and just used it for toys and entertainment. Besides, 95% of gunpowder based weapon history would have made the user a perfect target for fire benders.
