For a show that claims to be LGBT-friendly there sure isn't a single male gay in it

That was such a dull episode, outright gayness would had made it less awful. Townie episodes were so ill-conceived. At first I thought the point was to endear them to us so that we'd get a better feel of the stakes when they'd don the armours in Rose's armory and join the gems in an endgame fight. But nope, it was all pointless filler. It wasn't even entertaining.

The epilogue to SU is probably just him going through most of new homeworld. It become known fairly fast that as long as you can shapeshift into a form of 7 feet or taller you can get a ride on the best bicycle in the vicinity.

Technically the only female Gems are Diamonds since they are the only ones that can actually reproduce to create new Gems.

Interestingly the physical manner they reproduce is like a virus (Injectors resembling a bacteriophage) but the actual process of determining a Gem type is more like a fungus; under moist conditions they emit their “genetic material” which mixes with each other in different ways to form new organisms. The Diamonds frequently did this together in a circle. Hell, groupings of Gem types that are shown throughout the show as Gem wall art or as the visual to flashbacks like Garnet’s story to the Offcolors actually resemble mycelium hyphae shiro (in other words the root system of fungal colonies before the fruit structure AKA the mushroom appears). This follows the genderfluid nature of the show thematically since fungus species usually have far more than just two sexes which are required to reproduce although most of them are just considered subgroupings of female.

The rest of the Gem race are both asexual or morphologically omnisexual in that any of them can reproduce via shapeshifting, and the way that Pink reproduced implies reproducing as a male is just as possible. You could make the argument that this is either symbiotic or parasitic reproduction. Probably parasitic in the case of female Gem+male human, symbiotic in the case of male Gem+female human. Unlike ants and bees where almost the entire hive is a non-reproducing female, Gems don’t seem to have any innate gender because no “genetic Essence” remains from their incubation and they don’t have any nonfunctional reproductive structure.

Gem anatomy and classification is honestly one of the more interesting parts of the show. At a surface level it’s female empowerment, a bit deeper and its gender fluidity, and below that is a fascinating mix of all the stranger ways that organisms reproduce and the difficulty of describing such a system.

Ultimately I don’t consider Ruby and Sapphire to actually be lesbians beyond metaphor. They’re both sexless drones who pattern themselves male or female as it amuses them. Garnet and Pearl even dressed as men in the past without changing their mannerisms at all. Having genitals is not natural to them, none of them can reproduce with each other and they can breed with humans as either male or female.

So all in all, the show only really develops two straight relationships (Steven with Connie and Greg with Pink) and no gay ones as portrayed within the show itself. It only hints at two blatantly that I am aware of, one just a background groups of human tourists holding hands and the other being the two women with a son that Alexandrite rescues from the movie.

Some people took how freaked he was with her taking Rose’s form to mean she may have “Revenge Of The Nerds”’d him. I don’t really buy that though, her bratty behavior is too reminiscent of a stepdaughter. Plus her wild times were all with Vidalia, and Greg never would have trusted her again. To say nothing of how Garnet would react to it.

That said, she canonically grows an anatomically correct dong in her wrestler form meaning despite her general confusion of human anatomy she’s familiar with dick and balls. So she probably had a threeway with Marty or something.

They don’t have vestigial female organs and can’t reproduce with their own species. The masculine or feminine characteristics they adopt seem to be at random and based on desired fashionable style rather than identity. They never indicate any gender identity.
