I mean in terms of the ship. Obviously giving him his own subplots independent of Korra helps keep them apart, though by season 4 I think we were far enough clear of their boring relationship that there wasn't some great demand for it to come back.

Well, wizard cops has a long history of being quality entertainment. It would almost certainly have been much better than Korra.
I don't think they're quite comparable. Pema is as much older than Mako as she is younger than Tenzin and Lin. Mako is barely legal when the show begins.
Of course, given wacky lifespans on their world, it would eventually come out of creepy territory.

Now that hes an airbender he appeals a lot less. Nonbending Bumi jr and Lin however could work.
