It's a low bar but it's a constant bar. They drop the ball, they drop their entire business.

According to the draw goon, when he started taking anti depressants it killed the manic anxiety that drove him to churn out art. He also no longer wanted to really draw the exaggerated slap stick that had made them famous because he too closely associates himself with the character, so cartoon violence and exaggerated cynicism made him feel really uncomfortable if it involved his character.

So he wound up "growing" and "exploring new art styles" which is a standard boiler plate way for professional artists of all types to say they've cracked and just can't put out the same stuff they used to.

I can't remeber when, it was years ago, I want to say sound 2014 or 2012, the art style just completely lurches in to the now familiar tumblr bean nose territory.

You see a lot of that shit with TV shows too. I imagine the art is just simplified and streamlined to save time. I haven't bothered with these two dudes since they back before dickwolves when their shit became lazy gamer dad humor.

Their entire thing is "we run a multimedia company now" sort of deal. Their comics are just pure coasting sunday comic dad humor now.

I unironically love how edgy they used to be. It worked. It worked because it was FUNNY. Because they pulled it off well.

Does it all come down to timing? In the old comics the big moment, the punchline, the humor missile, lands perfectly. In the new comics there's no big "Ha ha!" moment at all, it's just bland all over.
