Dick, Tim, Barbara and Jason combined make for one full Batman, so he's redundant as well.

For me its:

Bruce Wayne (Batman) = doesn’t need a explanation

Alfred = batcave support/father figure/wise council to batfamily

Barbara (Batgirl) = civilian who gets inspired to mimic Batman. Unwanted sidekick at first, first offical sidekick after Batman realise so he can’t stop her mimicry, paraplegic batcave support late release on to refuel Batman’s angst

Dick (Robin/Nightwing) = orphan adopted by Batman because of similar tragic backstory which Batman sympathises with. Initially just a son to Bruce and not a sidekick. Becomes sidekick after deducing that Bruce is Batman. Early on only trains and provides bat cave support with little field experience. Spends more field time over time. Leaves to become nightwing after getting sick of Batman’s overprotectiveness. Competence as nightwing helps Bruce be more open to sidekicks and teamwork. Most light heartedly member of team. Destined to take the Batman title. Also most favourite son of Batman (but he’ll never tell the others that).

Jason (Second Robin/Red hood) = trouble street kid with junkie parents. Adopted by Batman in an attempt to provide him a better life and set hi, on the right path. Bad upbringing leaves him with constant anger issues. A constant challenge for Bruce as a father figure and mentor. Constantly challenges bruce’s beliefs. Basically a rebel, angsty teenager who never listens. Dies because of his stubbornness. Bruce blames himself. Serves as a way to regress Bruce back into lone wolf mode. Comes back as Red hood to be the anti-hero/Batman without a no kill. Does a very good job as red hood which makes Batman question his methods/morals. As red hood he’s basically a disowned son. Batman lets him get away with his antics as red hood because he blames himself for his troubles and wants to set him on the right path as opposed to throw him into prison like most criminals. In the end, Red hood never reforms and remains the black sheep of the family. Still loved by Bruce like a son, despite being an outcast.

Damian (robin 3) = Bruce’s bastard son and ultimate fuck up thrown upon him by the league. Very obnoxious and up himself. Youngest member to start fighting because of league training and probably some BS super augmentations or whatever. Almost like Jason 2.0 but more of a spoiled brat that Bruce needs to set straight as opposed to a troubled angsty teen. Kills a lot without remorse early on. Gets away with it because Bruce see’s him as his responsibility/his fuck up. Quickly learns to respect his father and his values. Develops a close sibling bond with nightwing. Never really loses his superiority complex. Dies very young and never gets revived. His death affects Batman the incredibly badly because of his young age. Cause Batman to temporarily give up the mantle and vow to only ever work alone.

Everyone else can fuck off.

They are but I like to see Damien as his second attempt at dealing with a rebel, only this time his successful because he learns from all his mistakes with Jason. But I also think Damien should die really young so that he doesn’t become redundant and useless like Tim is these days.

Retire the Batgirls and the Robins. Batman endangering kids and teenagers by making them help him in his crusade is and always has been a retarded idea.

Barbara Gordon can stick around, but only as Oracle. Batwoman and HelBert Huntress shouldn't be a part of the Bat-Family, but two unrelated Gotham City vigilantes that Batman just begrudgingly teams up with on occasion.

Helena Bertinelli and Kathy Kane aren’t really part of the Batfamily, they just team up on occasion and have similar motifs. Bruce dies and stays dead so Dick is the permanent new Batman while Damian is his Robin. Babs stays as Oracle or just leaves the Batfamily altogether at some point. Damian takes over as Batman after Dick dies tragically, and because of how close they were Damian basically pushes everyone away except Alfred. He eventually ends up like Old Bruce from the DCAU, teaching Terry how to be Batman.

Here are the ones I like and what I think would be their ideal role in Batman comics:

Alfred, Lucius Fox, Gordon -> permanent Allies
Dick Grayson -> First Robin. Later becomes Nightwing and fucks off to Bludhaven. Only helps out in Gotham occasionally.
Jason Todd -> Second Robin. Gets killed by the Joker. Gets revived by Ras. Stays a villain as the Red Hood
Tim Drake ->Third Robin. Later becomes Red Robin when Damian shows up.
Damian Wayne -> fourth Robin

Barbara Gordon -> first Bat girl. Gets shot by Joker. Becomes Oracle and stays Oracle
Cassandra Cain -> second Bat girl

Kathrine Kane -> Bat woman. Only helps out the BatFam occasionally. Mostly operates alone.

Huntress -> She is her own hero. If she shows up it is a crossover like with Savanna or Black Canary

Duke Thomas, Spoiler, Batwing, Bluebird -> They can all go

Cat woman -> Stays a villain. Only has very lost alliances with Batman for a short time before they betray each other.

Ace -> Is a dog chilling in the Bat cave
