Soulless film. Neither directors or production designer came from a 2D background, and only 2 of the 5 supervising animators worked on 2D films ( Chung and Dellarosa ) As a result, it's stiff and drab

Maybe getting the Wild Wild West and live action Grinch writers wasn't the best idea. Just saying

>King Harold's death is played for laughs
>Shrek forces an orphan teenager to become king in order to avoid doing the job himself
>Charming tries to kill Shrek in front of everyone as part of a musical
This movie is just unpleasant to watch

>King Harold's death is played for laughs
The greatest sin of this film.

This is the most faithful retelling of Journey to the West we’ll get

it was the best shrek sequel

Only improvements this film had over 2 was removing the pop culture references and toilet jokes, and giving Fiona a larger role ( she spends the entirety of 2 in her folks castle doing nothing ) That's it

Reminder that OG movie was only good because of Vicky Jenson. She was the one that improved the story and gave it the heart. Once she left, the franchise became a series of edgy jokes with none of the sincerity of first film ( 4 did make an effort to recapture that heart, but it was too late by that point )

>Vicky became a live action director
>Bibo returned to France, became a rapist and got arrested
>Rob started to make live action gaming adaptations
Shame how things turned out. They were the best directing team Dreamworks ever had

Based

It's certainly the most sophisticated Shrek sequel. Surprisingly relaxed in its pacing

please PLEASE fuck off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminder that Forever After was the only Shrek film made by Glendale branch instead of PDI, which is why it looks and feels different ( more colorful and bouncy, not as drab and stiff as previous ones )

All right. Just this once. Not in the mood for gifs. I did write a bunch of comments regarding this film tho, including the previous one regarding Forever After

Since i've made it clear that i adore Shark Tale's character animation, it's a freaking shame that nearly all of its supervising animators are no longer at Dreamworks.

Duncan left in 2004, with ST being his only contribution to the company. Gallat and Joubert left in 2006 after Flushed Away, and Salazar left in 2011 after Panda 2. Lingini is the only one left ( currently working in the Croods sequel )

>"The best Shrek yet!"
Who said that? lol

I think we can all agree that Bee Movie was the superior Dreamworks film of 2007, right ?

That says a lot about DreamW*rks.

Anyone else feel like they could have redeemed Charming in a better movie? He feels too lame an ineffectual to be the main villian, but he's goofy enough to make you not hate him.
I think the biggest reason why I feel this way is because this was the first and only Shrek film where it tried to make the villian seem sympathetic, or at least an underdog. Farquad and Godmother were assholes with loads of power, but Charming has to scrape his way up just to even try and get some respect.

Me

If anything, Charming's speech to the villains near the start was a lot better than Arthur's speech at the end

From what little I know about Journey to the West, I can't say you're entirely wrong.
If Shrek is the monk, Donkey is Pigsy, does that make Puss Sun Wukong, or the other guy whose name I forget?
Also who is the horse/dragon?

Arthur was just annoying in general and you never cared about him in general. Hollywood just kept shoving Justin into everything around this time without ever giving him anything to work with, just relying on his star power to make sales.

The other guy is Sandy, who's like also a dragon iirc, but not a horse dragon.

Only Shrek 1 is good.

this

Agreed. I did like Merlin tho, wish he got more screentime

Agreed. It had a great writing duo behind it, yet they didn't return for the sequels

I barely remember him outside of the scene where he's introduced. Definitely needed more screentime considering how much of a wet blanket Arthur was.
The subplot of Donkey and Puss switching bodies was pointless, too.
