We live in a society where people line up to see a Joker movie but won't even bother with a Superman movie. Where did it all go wrong, Superbros?

Since the 80s DC has actively gone against Superman sterotype and not given people the superman they expect...then use that as an excuse to "why superman doesn't sell"

Ironically though, Reeve Superman was a huge success in an era where Superhero movies weren't a thing yet. Superman it's not even an exaggeration to say that Superman was more loved than Batman.

Perfect casting certainly helped.

Certainly Superman could be loved again with a good movie for the masses, but so far no one has succeeded in doing it.

Man of Steel was too divisive imho.

>make him more moraly grey
>ends up edgy and try hard
>makes him good and wholesome
>even if it is a good story it is old and overused 80 years old character

There is no winning when writing Superman.

Smallville was a show that represented well the 2000s. I think viewers really liked Wlling Clark. Also Lex was possibly the best live action version ever. Which reminds us how important the rival antangonist is to the hero himself.

Did anybody like Smallville?

People loved Smallville. Didn’t you?

Smallville was succesful because teenage Clark wasn't a idea as saturated as his standart stories

It was standard 2000s CW teenage dreck.

10 seasons, even some special episode Ova. yeah i think people liked that very much.

The fact is that for Superman there are always a lot of prejudices. Smillville with the excuse of "Superman who is not yet Superman" was able to save itself from these prejudices.

2006 was 90 years ago

Yeah but take a look at the movies that were popular before that in the same decade: The Godfather, The Godfather II, Jaws, Jaws, American Graffiti, Saturday Night Fever, Rocky I and Rocky II, Animal House, Blazing Saddles, The Exorcist, all those fuckin Burt Reynolds movies. People had enough of pain, enough of horror, enough of all-powerful crime bosses, enough of petty drug users and rapists, enough of obsessive macho men with something to prove, enough of swears, enough of women who didn't do anything but get exploited. They started choosing movies like Star Wars and Superman and that trend carried on into the next decade - more Star Wars, E.T., Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Crocodile Dundee, Roger Rabbit, even Gremlins - comedy-horror where the laughs are still pretty wholesome and the horror is tame - and that set the tone for the big movies of the 1990s as well, Jurassic Park, Home Alone, Star Wars again. Even the horrors of the 90s like Sixth Sense had more cerebral action and slower pace to them.

That was the thing that Superman did right (although WB weren't involved in making it, so make of that what you will). It came at a time when people needed hope, and with a cast who sold it perfectly. It's a slow burn to introduce Reeve - he doesn't even appear until the movie is halfway done - and it takes pains to ensure you know he's not right because he's Superman, he's right because he's one of us, and we are just like him but without superpowers.

The DCEU is... it's the Godfather Part III, plugging along with its shitty story and shitty performances about shitty people doing shitty things, critically panned the whole way, decades after anybody wanted that in movies. It probably actively drove people to go see MCU movies. Who would watch Ben Affleck grimacing in a girdle and screaming about immigrants when you could be watching Chris Evans making light of his own ass and risking everything he has to save people he's never even met?

I mean even if there was a "good" Superman movie, I feel like people would still be lining up for Joker or even that new gritty angsty Batman movie. What's even the angle for Superman?

>I'm a good guy but I'm also the strongest, most overpowered with every power, also I'm boring ass Clark Kent uwu so relatable
Fucking every hero is good. The little girl that watches WW doesn't she's any less good than Superman. The little boys watching Shazam don't think he's any less good than Superman. Really the only thing DC uses to keep Superman special is that there's this notion he's gooder than the others and the everyone needs to dick suck him for it, which is just demeaning, but it's all they have to keep Superman a special snowflake, otherwise he's just another hero in a sea of heroes. It's no wonder Batman is popular, he stands out among his peers.

They should just let Superman go explore other planets or something and have sci-fi adventures meeting other aliens like him. Kinda like uhh Goku.

>You're a goofy idea that only a child would think is cool
Talk about throwing stones in glass houses! But the Joker will always be able to attract adults because there will always be horrible, crazy people who kill people and commit crimes for no clear reason. There will never be a Superman up in the sky coming down to save you, OP.

We live in a SOCIETY, where the circus came to the good ol' WASHINGTON D of C, and all of the clowns decided to stay and set up SHOP in CONGRESS!

Smallville also went out of their way to make sure that it wasn’t Superman but Clark they were portraying. They didn’t even have him wear the costume until like the last season. Because they knew that the second they made him superman they couldn’t have Clark develop or grow as a character anymore because people wouldn’t want that witH Superman

That’s the real reason superman isn’t relevant anymore, the real world proved superman and Batman aren’t real but proved the joker is very very real.

If every time a Batman movie came out it made money most of the time and every time a Superman movie came out it almost always lost money from the cruel heartless executive moneybags point of you which one would you be more likely to produce?

And then Joker nuked Metropulos in turned him into a bad guy

I wouldn’t spend money on giving Superman to Bryan Singer or Snyder (especially with a rush job first draft script)
It’s not rocket science

Stop being a fan of Superman.
Because if anything Warner Bros. the executive producers, and Hollywood in general have proven that it’s NEVER going to get better for Superman. Because they have never understood him will never understand him, But as long as they own the exclusive Film rights to him. Nobody but these assholes who don’t understand the character will ever be allowed to make a movie with him.

Fuck at this point you’d been better off just making an indie film with a superman rip off. Because expecting a big Hollywood studio to make a good Superman movie, is like expecting an Richard Dawkins to make a good Jesus Christ movie. It’s never going to happen because Richard Dawkins hates Christianity and hates Christians just like Warner Brothers Hates Superman and hates Superman fans

From their point of you both singer and Snyder had produced great movies and successful movies for them so it stands to reason that giving them their IEP and letting them do whatever they want with also bring success giving it worked for the X-Men and watchmen respectively.

And I would put more of the blame on Batman V superman feeling on executive meddling in Snyder himself although he’s not entirely absolved here

>writing
>acting
>directing
>producing
>cinematography
>visual effects
has there been a great superman movie since superman 3? no. has there been a good superman movie since superman 3? no.

>every time a Superman movie came out it almost always lost money

Well, technically Superman has been quite profitable for a lot of years, old 80s Superman has four sequels that sold great for its time.
It was expressly said that the end of the franchise was due to actor's accident not because people was tired of Reeve Superman.

He was literally the Tony Stark of the time.

When Superman return arrived at the cinema was now completely out of date like he saidyou can't do that. Movies have to somehow talk to people and as bad as it is to say the Joker seems to be closer to this age.

I'm not saying that making Superman's Films is now impossible, absolutely not. I'm saying that WB got one bad movie and a somehow decent movie ( 700 milion is shit, you fucking DC) but for them is not enough because Nolan Batman had hit the billion.

Superman fans should've embraced man of steel instead of wanting DC to chase the ghost of reeves.

Superman is the creation of a couple of Jews.

So was Jesus. And like Jesus people got tired of it and stopped really giving a fuck. It always sucked, you were just too stupid to realize it.

You know those annoying Bible thumpers? Yeah, that's you: a fan of Superman lol

It was the 90s. That decade ruined everything.

They haven't made a good Superman movie since the Christopher Reeves one. You need an actor with charm and you need a director and writer that get the character.

I think a movie that gives viewers hope and inspires them is something a lot of people desperately want in these times with COVID and all the shit that's happening, it's a perfect time for a Superman movie. The problem is that no one knows how to do one.

Part of Joker's appeal was also the fact that the media sensationalized it and pushed against it as well as other twitter assholes condemning it for being white supremacist and how it was a horrible movie. Naturally everyone wanted to see it, I had normies at my work who wanted to see it mostly because they wanted to know what the fuss was about. Some ended up thinking it was brilliant and others hated it.

It was also kind of a unique movie for most people whi aren't that knowledgeable about cinema, especially the whole akward scenes with Arthur and the stuff with Murray.

Yeah, it' true. Still i would like to have one euro for each time someone writes the word Jews here.

People were asking him to fully become Superman for awhile into the show and he technically was already Superman by the last two seasons. Only reason why they didn't commit to the costume was because Welling didn't want to.

The Lois and Clark show was also popular with people and it was a Superman show.

Its more of modern day america/society thing, people don’t wanna see hopeful stories about learning your birthright and helping others. And if you do make a movie like that, it will be bogged down and changed to meet some agenda. In our society now, people want a story that is a specific story targeted to them and their minority, not a story that speaks to everyone. Im not saying Superman is outdated, far from it, look at Superman birthright, probably the best modern interpretation of Superman’s origin.

The problem with Superman is that he is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the american way, the problem is truth and justice don't exist anymore, and "the american way" is an ever changing, nebulous concept that never really existed as a single, cohesive ideal to begin with.

>Should have embraced a subpar movie that failed to grasp Superman at a basic level
Fuck you and fuck Snyder, he can't make capeshit to save his kid's life.

>Superman birthright, probably the best modern interpretation of Superman’s origin.

I agree , but someone will surely insult you about this,

Absolutely wrong. In this modern day america/society thing, the people making movies are the ones who don’t want you to see hopeful stories about learning your birthright and helping others. They want divisive, grim shit that pits people against each other based on nonsense like the color of your skin. Real people want a real superman movie, and I guarantee if they released one it would be very popular.

Henry Cavill is a good actor and I actuallyike his portrayal of Superman for what HE can do. But he was unlucky to be under very poor direction.
