I really like Toph as a character. She feels like an anomaly within the avatar universe. Aang is the avatar, he's the key to fixing the world and providing order. Katara and Sokka are our protagonist of the show. Zuko is at beginning our antagonist, he wants to capture Aang.

Then we have Toph, who's backstory is completely away from the mythos of this cartoon. She seeks freedom in her life, which is completely away from the Avatar. She is on the journey because she chooses to be. Toph is blind, a handicap which she uses to flip how the world has viewed bending up till that point. Her parents think less of her, but she's capable of much more. She in her story could've taught Sandy Earth bending and fucked off, but personality wise she fucking kills all her scenes I don't know if Avatar could bounce back if she left the journey mid-way. She's not the most important character in Avatar the last airbender but she's essentially the most interesting character the show couldn't let go.
