I just finished Azzarello's New 52 run and thought it was brilliant! Just a few lingering questions:
1. What was Cassandra's motivation to support the First Born? Did they ever explain what the hell she really wanted?
2. What exactly was the point of Zeus's master plan? To reshuffle some Gods around or something?
3. Why was Diana so hesitant to take off her bracelets? She took them off and immediately pummeled the shit out of the First Born. What did this represent, story or character development wise?
Other than that, I thought the art was brilliant and the story was really interesting! Basically a mini-Game of Thrones tale of political intrigue and backstabbing. And Orion was totally based.
>did they ever explain generic “I’ll be powerful as this mega evil villain’s hench” grab for power, only slightly different because he quickly whipped her out of any aspirations for personal autonomy
>what was the point Don’t bother finding an answer, there ain’t one anymore now the entire damn run was retconned as false memories. Although Hecate’s fake does come off as a bit insulting considering what Witching Hour later reveals about the real Hecate
>why It’s the Gohan I’M NOT HOLDING BACK ANYMORE AAAA thing where she stops pretending to be for love and peace and all that. And I’m still annoyed she’s like that and never noticed what the Amazons were doing to their male babies. Really don’t think too hard about the bracelets either, them being blasted off by Grail didn’t help Diana too much at the time of Darkseid War when Wonder Woman was apparently temping as Goddess of War and was acknowledges as such by characters in other books EVEN THOUGH the events leading to that status were retconned
Aaron Bell
it didn't do anything in Darkseid War because Johns is a retard who doesn't know the bracelets being power limiters isn't something Azzarello made up
Chase Lewis
>3. Why was Diana so hesitant to take off her bracelets? They keep her from going berserk. The rare moment where Brian did his homework as this detail goes back to the Golden Age.
This was her best run ever and the writers that followed are faggots for not building upon it
William Morris
Perez was better but yeah it's pretty great
Juan Jones
>2. What exactly was the point of Zeus's master plan? To reshuffle some Gods around or something?
Zeus wanted a second chance. He’d lived a life of philandering and being a piece of shit and leaving children everywhere and he wanted to be reborn with a new chance at life and redemption.
It was an interesting arc that could’ve led to a cool dynamic of Wonder Woman and Zola raising a previously sleazy, awful man with a new chance at becoming a better person under Diana’s teaching but all these fucking hacks never followed up on and retconned this run to shit
Christian Wright
Thanks all. I also think Cassandra is a little more interesting than she might first appear. The First Born, Cassandra and Diana are all rejected by the world but they deal with it differently. Where The First Born and Cassandra deal with rejection by turning against the Gods and trying to bring it all down, Diana responds by forgiving people, bringing together the rejects (Orion included!), and overall trusting them to do what's right.

I dont remember a lot but i do remember loving this shit, this run made me actually care for Diana and had, imo, 2 of the best outfits she ever had(pic related and god of war diana)
It should have gotten an annual for the conclusion
Noah Hughes
I'm trying to get into comics with this run. I understand that Diana is supposed to be super compassionate and loves everyone but she turned that centaur into paste with her bare hands. I dig the fire she has going on but the two sides of her seem kind of hard to balance under the same run.

It was going to be a lost cause regardless of who suceeded him. At most you just got the worse possible deal out of a bad scenario with the Finches. Azz may have told a decent self contained story, but he didn't leave future writers anything really to build upon and left them saddled with a unworkable version of the Amazons.
David Gray
Why isnt there an animated movie of this arc? It would work perfectly as a 2 parts or even 3 parts movie
>Zeus becomes babby and wants to be redeemed >Ends up never coming back to see Diana after being reborn as an adult >Also it was all fake memories lmao >she tried so hard and got so far but in the end it doesn’t even matter
>meanwhile >Grail and Darkseid going on a happy family killing spree
It’s kind of horrifying to realise even Edgelord the Original Character has a better relationship with her dad than Diana does canonically
This run is good and gets too much shit on here. Part of the problem is that people assume she’s the same as Johns Wondy, which isn’t the case
Jose Ross
they are zombie horses, nobody cares
Connor Robinson
I like their interpretation of the gods an updated version of the assholes of old.
Bentley Myers
finch literally built on it and ruined it all in the process
Michael King
It works better as a self-contained AU
Oliver James
>It was an interesting arc that could’ve led to a cool dynamic of Wonder Woman and Zola raising a previously sleazy, awful man with a new chance at becoming a better person under Diana’s teaching but all these fucking hacks never followed up on You didn't read Meredith and David Finch's run, did you? They had Zeke abducted, again, but by Hecate secretly working for Hera. Baby Zeke got blood-sacrificed, and Zeus came back. Why? Because Hera missed his dick, and all the progress that she made about living without him was gone. Ares was brought back to life after his heroic sacrifice, and he tried to beat Diana to death because he didn't feel like a man without being the God of War
Logan Baker
Not him but didnt Hera get an entire redemption arc during that run and became kinda like the drunk aunt of Zeke?! Why the fuck would she kill him?!?!?
I wanted an issue of Zola and Hera just paling around in New York
Oliver Evans
Also Hera never turned Hippolyta back to flesh after turning her to stone in Azzarello's run All the Amazons came back, but Hippolyta remained a statue
And that allowed some evil Amazons to melt down that statue and use the magical clay to mold into Donna Troy, who they used to kill all of the male Amazons
Brody Cox
Well then we really fucking lost. I ended up caring for all the main characters of this run, it was because of them that a bare bones villain like the first born actually worked, hell the only reason i give a fuck about wonder woman is because of this run I just want an animated movie of this run and a proper sequel to it, even if its a "what if" scenario Now thats just fucked up
Might as well post the last five pages. This is technically the stuff that people are angry about when they complain that "Rucka just made it memories!"
