What are your thoughts on representation?

It's retarded and ironically racist when forced.

I didn't care about representation until they started to phase out all the straight white males in comics and tv shows.

>talking to woman
>"I hear ya man"
URGH, TRANSPHOBIC
This person needs to be cancelled

Why don’t you make your own comics and cartoons then?

Man there's really nothing so uniquely murder/rage inducing as being driven away from your own mediums and artforms and then being told to make your own

...

Zig Forums pirates everything so I’m not sure why you guys care so much

I used to not understand it at all, but hearing Zig Forums bitch about not having enough white male protagonists has convinced me it's actually something people genuinely care about for some reason.

I've never felt encouraged or inspired from media rep but apparently a lot of other people do. So I guess it's good.

It's narcissistic; the sort of dreck you get when any know-nothing can give his opinion on art through the Internet. They can't give any meaningful input but they can say "I want more of me in this!"
Of course when people actually follow along then they make empty wastes of time which are only supposed to be interesting because of the demographics of the characters.

Fundamental if your audience want to be acknowledged as brainless sociopaths

As a brownie, I never really had any problems with being 'under-represented'. It was nice, to have a darkie to project unto at times. Like Wolfwood in Trigun. But it didn't really concern me all that much, because (like today) if the story only had THAT to carry it, then it was simply not my thing. It's funny to think that, about 20 years ago, how apparently uninformed and ignorant the masses were, yet those times saw better developed brownies as characters (like say Filmore), than what is going on today.

Nowadays I wish this whole identity-polics-representation-bs would not exist, because you can't say anything against it, lest you get labelled nasty things. I'd say keep it, but at least, do some fucking reading.

Why did you decide to pull... I dunno, a bedouin man as a support character? Maybe there's something interesting in their mythology to work into a story. Or something odd yet curious about the culture that can serve a similar plot device. I dunno just something. If your character is strong enough to stand on their own, you won't need to make their entire identity a flag, or a dish, or some foreign words mixed with english. Maybe we could come up with fun stories that also educate a little.

That's basically how America was made so people should really watch their mouth when they say that. Respect your people or lose your place on top.

Forced diversity is bad.

It's cool seeing different kinds of characters with different backgrounds. There's a fine line between like actual representation and just token characters or whatever, but representation isn't strictly a bad thing and it's kind of retarded that people throw such a huge tantrum over arguing against it.

Hey, don't forget about Luma!

Representation is important for very young kids, who will respond to physical similarities, rather than personalities.

However, once you're an older teen, or an adult, the characters personalities, philosophies, and abilities, should be good enough to carry the story, that it doesn't matter what they look like.

But can you tell when it is forced and when it's not? Even if it's just bullshit pushing for browny points, the effect still has an obviously positive side, but opposing ALL diversity efforts simply because they MAY be insincere will have an equally incontestable negative effect.

Nah I'm kidding I hate darkies too

Daisy looks fine but peach looks like shit. They should have at least made her hair black.

I have no issue when consuming all-black stories (like African mythology), all Japanese stories (manga), mostly alien stories (Mass effect), all monster/demon stories (manga again), all robot stories (transformers), or all latino stories (aztec mythology)
I really don't understand why all-white stories prevent people from building an empathetic connection with the characters.
Also, gingers are a smaller minority than black people, I don't see what replacing them accomplishes.

>Maybe there's something interesting in their mythology to work into a story. Or something odd yet curious about the culture that can serve a similar plot device.

If it's not written by a Bedouin (but someone from Lebanon is also fine because they're Arab too) then it's cultural appropriation/orientalism/colonialism/etc/etc

They're doing it specifically because of people like you.

>Representation is important for very young kids, who will respond to physical similarities, rather than personalities.
How young are we talking here?
Berenstain Bears and Ducktales were my go to when I was ~3-5 and and I am neither a bear not a duck.
Maya the Bee and Teddy Ruxpin too.

>But can you tell when it is forced and when it's not?
Can't you?

Get woke, go broke.

Guarantee this will eventually bomb for the same reasons Zig Forums projects always fall flat on their ass

You didn't own them, though. Otherwise it wouldn't have been so easy to push you out of it.

>then it's cultural appropriation/orientalism/colonialism/etc/etc

Artists should become private people again. That's what made people of TV and movie fame in the age before internet actual GODS, that seem untouchable by your avarage citizen. To think how many potentially amazing stories are out there, just waiting to be told, that are held back because of the possibility of bad public opinion.

I thought Zig Forums didn't care until I saw the Simonfags whining for an entire month straight.

>Representation is important for very young kids, who will respond to physical similarities, rather than personalities.

According to some quack in service to the trendy ideologies, I'm sure. Remember when it was trendy to say that little kids aren't racist, they're taught to be? Now the story's different.

Maybe if retards like stopped using whiteness to be racist, there'd be more white MCs

I thought cross-board links are not allowed.

>defending blackwashing
Shame on you.

Either she taught her to talk like that or it didn't happen. Leaning towards the latter but I can't tell with these people.

I think making characters that happen to be diverse is cool
I think making characters with the sole purpose of being diverse is insulting towards the people theyre trying to reprisent

every time a trans representation character is made they arent ACTUALLY trans, they get magically transformed into a real girl missing the point in the first place
every time a gay character is made they are either only established as gay after the fact for forced diversity points OR they are blatantly shown "acting gay" in your face lisp and all

not only that but those forced diversity characters only end up as caricatures for actually racist and hateful people to feel like their opinions are valid
gothams bat woman is an example of a shitty character taking in the reigns of an established one ruining not only their own legacy but also the originals AND making a character for sexists to hate

as a bisexual brown man I cant say that I consider miles morales an empowered mexican character I relate to with whatsoever
hes black but just with the added hispanic mom so they dont have to also make mexican spiderman
no miles is JUST black spiderman, he isnt his own character with his own tropes or story he coasts off the legacy of an established one
do you know the kind of character I DO like?

oberyn martell, a good CHARACTER who happens to be non-white AND bisexual
he isnt explicitly fighting for his gay love or the future of his oppressed people or any faggot moral to represent right wing bad politics in the real world
hes just a good character period

>oberyn martell
