Avatar sucked

They tried but all of them have been terrible (voltron Korra she ra)

Sad

Explain.
You mean story driven in the sense of a star and an end?

Every cartoon of the last decade has been knocking off Avatar in one way or another

I mean the story is a constant goal for nearly every episode, as in serialized as opposed to episodic. The opposite would be Adventure Time or Steven Universe which has "lore building" episodes but no overarching story like Avatar with a goal.

So you mean a story that has one thing to do and all the episode are about searching for the thing?

There are. People forget about them because they're bad.

Because prior to the internet, you were kind of at the mercy of the TV schedule if you wanted to watch something, so serialized TV was a lot less practical. Even in live-action television (disregarding soap operas), even the more plot driven shows were usually akin to the X-files where the show was written in a way where it could be watched without following the ongoing story (about half of Avatar was this way, too). Nowadays streaming eliminates that inconvenience, so there are a LOT more of them now.

Kinda, I guess something like a long movie separated into episodes. Like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars if they were TV shows.

Name a few?

fuck you

Amphibia's kinda the opposite. There's an overarching goal of getting Anne home but they also spend a lot of time fucking around. Especially S1 where they basically couldn't do anything bc the valley was impassible and the plot had to come to them. I guess in that way it's probably the most similar to avatar.

Networks thought kids didn't care, and you were always at the mercy of being canceled on a whim, and it would make reruns harder because they'd have to be in order to make sense.
In the age of streaming and adult animation becoming bigger you see it more often.

>All these plotfags
What's wrong with episodic shows?

I miss gumball man. It was the closest thing to scratch that spongebob nostalgia in a long time.

because all the writers are female now

Nothing, but it's interesting to see a story with an end goal and status quo changes story from time to time.

Why do women have sex with each other when they could be having sex with men? I mean us men are right here but there they go slobbering away on each other. Maybe that's why there weren't more shows like avatar... because lesbians.

that's why.

An overabundance of them.
There's a shit ton of episodic shows, we don't really need more. While serialised shows are still in the minority.

>voltron Korra she ra
Trollhunters was a hundred times better than that junk.

Kids don't want story driven shows

AYO HOL UP SO YOU BE SAYIN YOU SUM FINNA LAST AIRBENDER?

yes they do this is why there was such an ATLA craze back then and why anime was so popular with young teens

There's more now than before.
Back in the days of broadcasting television, it's hard to have a story-driven show because people would miss episodes and the plot would become hard to follow. This is especially true for children, who don't usually get to dictate when they watch TV. Episodic format allows more viewers to tune in at any given time and keep up given that they're aware of the show's premise. And the show's premise is usually summed up during the intro: Fairly Odd Parents, Spongebob Squarepants, Powerpuff Girls, etc.
Nowadays, with streaming services, it's much easier for people to follow story-driven shows, even children.

Too much pressure on the writers. The ATLA crew could barely string together 2 good seasons and fell apart in season 3.

young teens are not the intended demo of cartoons

This basically sum it all up.

It's a miracle that a channel like nick even greenlit the show at all. Likely only allowing it because most of it was mostly episodic so you could watch anywhere and not be completely lost.

I hate this fucking picture
Their eyes are too small, probably a pre-pilot promo image
Why the fuck is appa standing there like that
and this location isn't anywhere in their world, it's just the Great Wall of China

>and this location isn't anywhere in their world, it's just the Great Wall of China
