Star Trek 4 was made at a time when the Filmation Star Trek cartoon was still considered canon. So stuff from the cartoon seeped into the movie and TV show canon, like the Caitians and Spock's whole origin story. It was years later that Roddenberry changed his mind and said the cartoon was non-canon and did not represent years 4-5 of the five year mission. Make of it what you will.
