It's the Age of Streaming, user. Lore, ongoing storylines and series which are basically 10-hour movies are the new normal.

It really is just a watered down version of Gravity Falls, I'm not sure if it's due to Matt having also worked on it or Disney trying to recapture lightning in a bottle.

Anne is fucking cute though, which makes the show worth it to me.

Amphibia IS an episodic funny cartoon, it just so happens to also be an adventure fantasy story. The episodic comedy episodes that show off the characters' personalities, and in turn make the more dramatic moments compelling to watch. Those dramatic moments make us relate to and care about the characters even more, which make the funny moments even more enjoyable.

The comedy and the drama work together. And it's not like this is some hip new trend, the Simpsons was doing this 30 years ago.

But if you really want a cartoon that doesn't take itself seriously, just watch Teen Titans GO.
