They paid the blob the full money she was to have gotten for six episodes, considered money well spent just to get rid of her.

I don't believe any of that. I think this was a one-off ratings trap episode and nothing more. The idea it would be a multi-episode story arc was something just assumed by people because it would've made the initial announcement actually have a point.
