Having characters talk about the Internet and anime is the new "hello fellow young people" thing to do. Like all those shows in the 00s where a character starts talking about made up video games as they're still like they were in the 80s. To an aging hipster in their 30s this is still something unique even though modern kids don't really give a shit anymore. Anime isn't some niche subculture for all the corner autistic nerds anymore, today they just watch popular FOTM anime on streaming services as if it's normal.
