Tom Ruegger was never asked to return for the revival but he expressed great interest in doing so. WB ignored the emails from him and the other writers of the original show for months and finally responded saying the roles were already taken, even though they weren't taken when they first tried to contact them. They're absolutely heartbroken and they still have no idea why they were treated like this.
What the fuck is WB animation thinking? You can't have this show without the people who made it successful in the first place.
>What the fuck is WB animation thinking? That they didn't want or need every single person that was involved with the original involved with the reboot.
Dominic Sanders
>What the fuck is WB animation thinking? They thought the 7D sucked?
Dylan Phillips
user, absolutely none of the writers from the original are involved with the reboot even though they all wanted to, and they've never been given an explanation. At least CN had the courtesy to contact and offer the PPG reboot to Craig McCracken before he had to turn it down due to his Disney contract.
Andrew Ramirez
Probably because they already decided upon the guy from Family Guy as showrunner, who has his own particular vision and didn't feel he'd be able to control these older, more experienced writers. You can't have multiple alphas in the room.
OP seems to be paraphrasing from twitter posts by Tom's son (who voiced Skippy Squirrel), which Tom retweeted. Emotional hyperbole aside, it seems generally accurate. twitter.com/NateRuegger/status/1315349587410919424
Man I can understand being upset at being passed over but that's laying it on a bit thick. I'm willing to give the new writing team a chance, at least.
Matthew Clark
Animaniacs was only successful because it was expensive lmao. When it was on TV shows like He-Man were on TV. He-Man was one of the biggest hits.
Now there's a lot of cartoons on TV that are better drawn than Animaniacs (even if not as expensive,) so the reboot is gonna probably get ignored.
Nothing to do with the "writing" - that was interchangeable and would have been lightyears better with cartoonists using storyboards.
Noah Nelson
>and they've never been given an explanation. Why do they need one? WB didn't want them involved. The end.
>Craig McCracken Was the creator of the series and probably owns certain rights. Very different to writers.
Lucas Adams
awww you poor fucking baby
Cameron Hill
Is that directed at Tom Ruegger?
Ethan Turner
We're still getting Orange Man Bad jokes, user. Ruegger would just be a lateral move
James Bennett
How about the OP does the basic research instead of everyone who reads the thread having to make sure he isn't full of shit.
Better.
Camden Rivera
Tom Ruegger created Animaniacs and he was treated this way, nimrod. It's in WBs legal right to act like this but it's still an asshole move.
Jacob Scott
Animaniacs is a pop culture driven show. These people are old. they were cracking Jerry Lewis jokes in the fucking 90s which goes to show how out of touch they were 30 years ago let alone now.
Brody Rodriguez
Yes
Joseph Garcia
Hes standing up for his dad and other people he knew on the crew when he didn't do anything but voice Skippy, which he wouldn't be able to reprise anyway. That's admirable at least.
Asher Foster
There's absolutely no reason why they need to use the original producer. It might suck with the new approach, but usually when you bring back the original producer, you *know* it will suck because they'll try to do what worked 30 years ago.
Also Hollywood is very ageist and just like Ruegger mostly hired young writers for Animaniacs and froze out the veteran animation writers, they're doing the same to him now that he's an old veteran. Circle of life.
I think it would have been better if they could have gotten more of the original writers to contribute besides Randy Rogel, though. But Ruegger doesn't have dibs on running it.
William Martin
>user, absolutely none of the writers from the original are involved with the reboot even though they all wanted to, and they've never been given an explanation. Because as established writers, they command a higher asking price.
Carter Edwards
>they were cracking Jerry Lewis jokes in the fucking 90s When I watched it as a kid, I thought that director/mr. clown character was funny. As I got older and learned who Jerry Lewis was and how he tried to reinvent himself with a concentration camp clown movie, it became even funnier. It's okay to have layers.
Angel Wright
Out of curiosity, for those who would have wanted Tom Ruegger on this reboot, how many of you enjoyed 7D?
Juan Taylor
The Jerry Lewis stuff holds up better now than the references that tried to be contemporary. It's like "The Critic" around the same time is full of references to early '90s movies nobody remembers.
Evan Morris
It was ok. It was written solely for single digit age kids unlike Animaniacs, but it got the job done.
Wyatt Torres
Nobody's watched anything Ruegger made since he left Warners, it's just sticking up for the original guy.
I wish they had gotten Paul Rugg back to write, but he's busy with the Muppets I think (he's one of the cast members of "Earth to Ned").
Colton Hughes
They were never contacted so they never had the opportunity to negotiate that far. Their replacements are only a couple of years younger than them.
Connor Butler
Is Gordon Bressack involved with the new Animaniacs? He was a writer for the original that worked on some other shows I liked.
Ian Cox
Bressack died last year.
Wyatt Butler
While I always want the original cast and crew for revived shows to come back, it's just a decision that the execs made. Whether it leads to the show being shit or not is yet to be determined.
