Though it's certainly possible and no biggie to have romance on Sonic comics again, it's definitive that there won't ever be any allowed romance that involves the game characters, as seemingly mandated by SEGA. While that is unfortunate, I personally couldn't care much for them in particular, since there's much more freedom and leeway for artistic creativity as you handle the comic ones, which theses happen to be the ones I care the most.

In my opinion, I agree, and I'm quite faithful of just about everything of Archie Sonic, but to argue whichever is really the best of the two doesn't mean much, when in the end, both are clogged of different problems and issues that drag immensely their quality and potential.

Sonally, you refer? I wouldn't say that. For me, the relationship between them barely developed, only to be receiving of any attention and insight in forms of breadcrumbs here and there, instead of focusing at them altogether for one reserved moment, and that's the exact state they have been at for the entire of the pre-boot continuity.
There's no exception during Ian's reign, in which rather ideally dedicating few of stories that for once and all flesh out their personal feelings and motives for the other and allocate agency at both simultaneously, all we did ever got out of Ian was a last-minute rushed reunion of the two into one past the end of Iron Dominion. The issue here, was that Ian felt unnecessarily so focused at arranging more longevity at his plots and ensuring a peak epicness for each issue, that he forgot to address how Sonic's and Sally's remaining feelings for each other, long past the slap fiasco. Ironically enough, I thought the recent birth of love between Monkey Khan and Sally were, while short-lived, still further developed and consolidated.
For the entire of the run, Sonally was basically never much covered. Though you can reserve a part of the blame to give for SEGA for that they brought much of headache to the writers at supervising Sonic and Sally, that still won't justify the blasphemy of all writers, including Ian, to have never ever bringing much of total focus on making their relationship finally stand on two feet.
However, I agree on your opinion of romance, in that definitely, while it shouldn't be very widespread, it also must not either expurgate itself out either. Romance is just as much of common genre as action, horror, comedy and others, and there's nothing wrong with experimenting it in Sonic and other franchises.

No, SEGA told Ian she's not allowed to be attracted to either. Team Dark isn't a thing anymore, they're labelled "a brand", and they're not friends either, and Knuckles was debunked back in Chronicles. As of now the only pseudo-relationship that exists is Sonic/Amy.
