Star Vs had straight romances for four seasons and was garbage. Steven and Connie's relationship was dull as shit compared to Pearl and Rose or even Pearl and Greg and yet it was portrayed as this beautiful thing. All of Finn's relationships just went fucking nowhere.

A lot of shippers seek out romance for its own sake, not as a minor element of a story or somewhat more major element of a story. In that case they should stick to romance novels, fanfiction, and Adult media as they're yearning for something that isn't going to happen - little kids don't care about romance.
"Gay" characters, when it's more than a last minute kiss, are written like slightly spicy friendships in cartoons, which just makes a sad spotlight of the people who are all for it as they have little real social relationships in their lives. Family, neighbors, friends - little of that.

I think American based fandom is in a sense hamstrung by the death of the romantic comedy and the relative nonexistence of the short form romance series (much more common in Asia). If there were romance films and series being released regularly maybe they wouldn’t bother begging for romance in kids cartoons.
