>For many Superman readers, the biggest selling point of Future State may be the promise of seeing Jon Kent take up the mantle of Superman. We've already seen one take on that story in the form of the zombie-themed DCeased franchise, but Future State has the benefit of being set within the traditional DCU. Unsurprisingly, Jon will find his father left behind very big shoes to fill.

>"We see him as finally reaching a point where his dad can say, 'This is the family business. You are Superman. It's your job now. I'm going to go take care of this over here, out in space. You need to keep an eye on Metropolis.'" said Rich. "For Jonathan as a legacy character - which as we know, DC has a great history of continuing these kinds of characters and creating new versions and connecting them to the past - he has a different mode than his father ever did, because he has no secret identity because his father recently told everybody who his family was, but he's also half human."

So can we get Jon deaged after this?

Yara Flor looks like Angelina Jolie.

So Batkek fucking lost

>Rich continued, "There's a lot to explore there in terms of who this character is. He's also grown up offstage in the future, which is a total other problem. He's got that kind of human, identifiable element that hopefully current readers can be attracted to. Here's a guy trying to figure out how to make his way in the world. And where we see him in Future State is there is a whole, rampant new version of Brainiac called Brain Cells that is self-replicating, and John is trying to figure out, 'How do I stop this? How do I protect my city?' The same time he's looking at Gotham, which is now is in big trouble. And he's like, 'How do I keep Metropolis from becoming Gotham?'"

>Jon's fight to stop Brain Cells will also put him in conflict with Supergirl, who won't be too happy to see her cousin resort to the same Bottle City tech Brainiac used to steal away Kandor. In the process, Kara will take her own steps toward becoming a better hero in Clark's absence, finally evolving from Supergirl to Superwoman.

Based and same

Ugh

So I haven't been keeping up with this thing. Is it just a 2 month long alternate timeline or will these new characters carry on in future books?

>DC fans can expect multiple incarnations of Wonder Woman to take part in Future State, though their respective stories won't all necessarily unfold at the same point in the DC timeline. One of them is a brand new addition to the DCU - a Brazilian heroine named Yara Flor.

>"We will eventually discover that there are connections to the other tribes of the Amazons that we have established," said Rich. "Yara does have some connection to the Amazons, and part of what we'll discover in her origin is what activates her position, what makes her Wonder Woman at this time. She's from Brazil, but was an immigrant to America. There's also that element of her story. Even though we'll see her currently active as Wonder Woman, eventually we'll learn what her origin is - partially her figuring out what that means, where she's from, why this is her, how she relates to Diana, how she relates to the other Amazons."

>"Joelle was looking at Yara as - she is new to this," continued Rich. "Her humanity is still very much intact and very much important. From a reader standpoint, what does that mean for me when I look at this character? Diana Prince is a goddess, so she's always a bit above us. This is a chance to sort of get back to some of the early roots of Wonder Woman where Diana was trying to be human and trying to learn how to be human. Now we're going the opposite way - how does a human learn how to be a goddess?"

A reminder that Marie Javins is in charge of DC and while she was at Marvel she thought this was a good idea for Dr. Strange.

>the bad guy lost
No shit

>Rich teased Future State is just the start of DC's larger plans for the New Gods.

>"We are sort of looking at them as a core to our cosmic titles," said Rich. "Everyone always loves to play with the New Gods... Shilo Norman has actually been off stage for a little while. I just loved Mister Miracle in general. I had worked on the Tom King and Mitch Gerads book and trying to figure out how to do more Mister Miracle. Here's a great opportunity to take a character we haven't seen in a while and put him in a more traditional superhero sense... Brandon Easton had just this great take of giving the two sides of him, and as the escape artist, the ultimate escape is rising above your station and becoming this other figure, becoming who you want to be."

>Rich continued, "Going forward, you'll see more and more importance on the Fourth World - how we rebuild that. The Source Wall had been destroyed, which is also part of the Death Metal story and how we get there. Are there ways we can play with those characters? Like having a completely new version of the Black Racer, who at this point doesn't seem that connected to the New Gods, but could potentially be more connected to them later. It's always been one of the more futuristic aspects of the DCU. Kirby was way ahead of his time, so now that we've caught up to him, I'm curious to see what I can do next with that and what we can do next with that."

>Batgirls...but not really
eat shit DC

>DC has a great history of continuing these kinds of characters and creating new versions and connecting them to the past
I'm kinda surprised DC let this statement go to the press, considering Didio's history of shitting on Wally and Dick.

>Regardless of how much the actual plot of Future State impacts the present-day DCU in 2021, Rich promises these books will give readers a taste of the tone and thematic content of the Superman and Wonder Woman lines going forward.

>"Like I was saying earlier, I definitely don't want Superman to be this heavy, dark book," Rich said. "I want to continue to examine what he means. It's interesting, because I edited Batman for a few years and not a lot of writers really ever pitched me on Batman. You get a lot of Superman pitches, and the difference seems to be when writers pitch to me on Superman, and artists, they tell me what the character means to them and what they feel that character should say to people. To me, that's very interesting, and that's the kind of thing I wanted to explore. And as I work with these different writers and bring new ones in, that's kind of what I'll be looking for. How does Superman speak to you and how do we want that to communicate to the reader?"

I like that Nubia's involved but hope Green Snake isn't forgotten...

Wonder Woman with batmans belt and a Kryptonite necklace

No, user. This is what I wanted.

>Gotham City has been taken over by an insidious law enforcement agency known as the Magistrate.

>"They patrol the streets using advance surveillance weaponry in the form of 'Cybers': robot law enforcement peacekeepers, who are the highest level of law in the food chain," Abernathy explains. "I've joked internally that they're the 'Sith Lords' of Gotham, and they basically patrol the streets and keep it 'safe' from all sorts of 'masks' - villain or hero. It is now illegal to be a masked vigilante in the city, and the consequences are dire."

>The leader of the Magistrate is a man named Peacekeeper One.

>"Who he is, what he is... get a sense of that as the story progresses, but there's one element to explore for years to come."

>whole, rampant new version of Brainiac called Brain Cells
They better not fuck up Vril or Lyrl for this stupid shit.

Did she have some kind of falling out with Supes and Bats?

wasn't this the Stan Lee one?

>While these will work as standalone stories you can begin in January and finish in February, Abernathy tells Newsarama some of these characters and storyline threads will continue when the modern-day Bat-books resume in March.

>"With the Bat group title, it's definitely a look towards the future," Abernathy says. "How much of that future is true is uncertain, because decisions in the present can always change the future. On one hand, yes they're great standalone stories but the seeds... wait, 'Future State' doesn't plant seeds; it's already crop-grown. The seeds are already planted; these stories will come to fruition in the main line."

>core to our cosmic titles
The core of their huge cosmic sub-franchise of two GL books and one New Gods mini?

This takes place in the distant future, both Bats and Superman are dead. Hence the title "Immortal WW"

>Dick is Nightwing
>Jason is Red Hood
>Damian is [REDACTED]
>Tim is back to being Robin
Why is Tim so pathetic?

>not every panel is a butt shot
What is even the point?

I'm looking forward to it. But not in an entirely good way.

Gonna lose my mind if Wonder Woman ends up fighting the Time Trapper

Don’t worry no one cares about them

at least post the full character pic

>Amazonian
that means she will get empragnated by the Boto

>Don’t worry no one cares about them
And thank fuck for that. Though I guess there's still Keith Giffen and Ivan Reis.

>Fat Luthor
guess after Sups died he ate 40 cakes in his honor

Alternate timeline/flashforward.
It was meant to be DC's "next big thing", but Didio got canned and it got retooled into this.

That's actually Bouncing Boy I think, the L stands for Legion.

It is, his shoulder also says BB. And Brainiac 5's head seems to be attached to him.

Nothing wrong with being Robin.

I am so glad to see Zatanna back in fishnets. Please carry this back over the main books in the present.

Why is Deadpool in DC now?

Midlife Crisis.

He was Red X the entire time.

He's just coming back after that one Batman/Superman annual, years ago.

Dr. Strange the cool and rad Sorcerer Supreme

whatsherface from far sector is in this?

When did Red X come to official comics?
A lot of these designs are pretty awesome.
