Ive got a lot of free time now and I want to start developing my own cartoon. Does anyone have links to resources or tips on how to do this?

Start with a comic and if you can make manage that consistently, then jump to a cartoon. It's much more work than you realize and there's a bunch of areas you can work on individually, like writing, character design, background design etc.

Ground the show in the real, personality-driven interactions between the characters.
That is all.
Keeping a list of elements, phrases, scenes, shots, and stories you want to do is also great.
You'd be impressed by the ammount of genuinely talented people that don't get their shows picked up.
Competition is too strong and sometimes the network rather invests on safe bets.
