This is pretty astute and probably the heart of it.
Beyond being dark and edgy with potential for wacky hijinks, both characters had a period where they got a massive push and were basically treated as unstoppable and were written like a megaphone for audience opinion. Even though both have plenty of poorly written deck, they also have these sub-fandoms who basically self-insert as the character (whether they admit it or not) and get upset when the character deviates from their personal views regardless of how it's written.

Unrelated to OP, apologizes, but much of Sonic fandom seems to be pretty latching at Shadow, and only Shadow. Personally, I have a feeling that there are actually not many out there who have a greater care for many characters, theses who are beyond just Shadow... and, Sonic, and Scourge, and just about every other hedgehog mobian.
Or is it just me? The most I felt this way, was from the last IDW Sonic storytime, where there was absurdly a large amount of posts dedicated to just Shadow, perhaps way more than theses of who specified everything else of the comic.

Perhaps...? Well, I was never much of anime fan, much less with cartoons such as DBZ and Naruto, and the sort. Rather, I grew up with the classics of retro Cartoon Network and few more of western animated franchises, and I have a easier time to read western-made comics than the japanese ones. Specifically, I follow the Sonic franchise and comics for the vast amount of colorful and great characters (and few great games), and not because it has a lot of influence from DBZ.
Therefore, I wouldn't know much of Sonic fans and their type of taste by the majority, hence the question. Regardless, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one, yeah. In my opinion, for as much as I may think Shadow is good, I'm wholeheartedly not at all approving of the "evil dark twin rival" trope, as I feel it's guaranteed to warrant a lot of cloned recolors of the main main character, just like Scourge.

The big problem with Shadow is that everybody just defaults to writing him like Vegeta without all the character growth. Just "FITE ME KAKASONIC! U R WEEEEK". Shadow works better when he's not tethered to the forced rivalry shit that people don't know how to handle. If anything I'd be super content if we just got more stories of Team Dark doing their own thing for G.U.N. and dealing with a lot of military and espionage stories.
