I enjoy grimdark the most when it is a "darkest before the dawn" scenario. The joy of seeing Lake's happy ending is higher because of how dark it got for her to earn it. I respect book 3 for having a tragic ending, but I'll always prefer season 2's optimism.

It was just a good dynamic. Jesse needed someone willing to bluntly tell him he needed to take back control of his life, Lake needed someone to get her to realize she wanted more out of life than just faffing around the train.
