Why don't comic books sell? Is it even possible to increases sales?
Why don't comic books sell? Is it even possible to increases sales?
there is an epidemy going on
Comics make up a small percentage of revenue for publishers. It's all about merchandise and these days it's about the IP's value for their parent companies. This is why WB and Disney do very little for the comics themselves as long as it's self sustained. What they care for are the characters and stories they can take and use in things like tv shows, cartoons, movies, games, etc.
>Why don't comic books sell?
the Comics Code Authority
1) They are sold at Comic book shops, which aren't that common.
2) They're $4 an issue. That adds up fast.
3) They are so fucking dense in terms of story and lore. You have to know so much shit to get into them.
4) People always want to start at the beginning, which is practically impossible in a comic.
5) The story you could be reading could be hijack by an event.
6) The story you could be reading could drop information about another book that would just baffle you.
7) How am I supposed to read the current X-Men status quo? Do I have to read ALL the fucking books?
8) They can be tremendously unsatisfying when villains just simply get away after they've killed several characters.
9) The volumes that come out are never fucking organized. You got trades that will exclude annuals or special issues where major plot stuff happens, or you get trades that tell the event out of order. Spider-Verse's $50 trade is fucking atrocious. It has the main story told upfront, and then every tie in is told in clusters throughout it, meaning you get the main event first with some holes in the plot, and then sporadically get why things happen AFTER you finished the story!
10) Any medium that requires a guide in how to read the series properly was never going to catch on.
Because they're like $3.00 for a book that's half ads and takes, at best, 15 minutes to read.
We live in a world where entertainment is basically post scarcity. Even law abiding citizens can get infinity hours of entertainment for a very cheap streaming service subscription. The idea of paying nearly a dollar a minute for any form of entertainment is utterly ludicrous.
Comics are selling quite well. Marvel and DC comics are just niche now and have been essentially R and D for licensing, movies, and TV since the 80s.
The biggest demograhic for comics are white males yet Marvel, DC, Image, etc refuse to create content for them and instead push extreme leftwing/feminsit propaganda that only cares about bashing adn humiliating male characters and push up mary sue female and minority characters.
>inb4 muh (((woke)))
It's not welcoming from a normie standpoint. At any given time there are dozens of Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Harley Quinn, etc etc etc books on the shelves and if you were to just walk in and try to pick one, you'd pretty much have to grab a trade #1 and see if you dig it or start something in the middle.
You're left pretty much at the mercy of prior research or having the clerks walk you through what you're interested in in order to get into a story and not be confused as shit.
honestly, this perfectly sums it up for me. it's why I just read manga instead
They do sell, they just make most of their money trough merchandising and IP.
Too WOKE for me to spend hard earned cash on...
>I'm frighten what they'll do to Deadpool Three.
>5) The story you could be reading could be hijack by an event.
This one is a big issue. When the character just goes "Well, that sure was crazy (*read issue #256 of whatever to see what he's referring to!)" it pissed me off greatly.
manga doesn't have problem selling though, dumb cuck
This
I would get into it and always have wanted to but the fact that there's no core linear story makes me wonder what's the point in it.
The first two had Deadpool being pegged, Colossus being a gentlesir, NTW is a gaygrill, 'Fox News' being used as an insult, etc and so forth. Seems mighty "woke!" to me already.
You can’t unmove the market from video games, but you could try from anime, but young boys will ALWAYS prefer to watch something over reading it. If you’re trying to move kids ove from Manga to Comic Books, you need to start selling trades in grocery stores and promote them on mobile devices
Imagine reading lmao
The fuck does "muh BASED chinkbooks!" have to do with any of it?
The only stuff I can read is Batman jusy because the animated shows provided enough background for me to generally understand what’s going on at any given point. I can’t even do that Spider-Man
It bothers me that the west doesn't take actiom cartoons seriously. One of the big reasons people gravitate towards anime is because despite the wet having big franchises that people wanna see animated it never happens. If superheroes got good action cartoon adaptations like anime does there would be a bigger fanbase. Inb4 comparing anime to western action cartoons. My point is there's so much more content on the anime side whereas the west thinks anything animated is for children and unimportant
They're too expensive at this point, they require way too much backstory. writers and artists change causing a whole bunch of problems.
Have you seen how much they cost?
fucking 4 bucks per issue is insane, and you can't even find them in proper stores, you have to go to some hyper specialty shop to get some.
Remember when a few people said "these aren't very good" and then the creatures on twitter decided that everyone who liked old things was a Nazi?
So, Manga is selling really well, maybe try giving them big eyes.
Indeed, but the second movie didn't make me feel I was getting pounding over the head with...what did darq call it?
>FORCED CONFORMITY..
>Plus I'm glad they got away with this here.
This.
Marvel and DC along with Diamond fucking destroyed the American comic market.
Marvel and DC with their shitty pratices and story telling where you have to buy so much to get a proper story, and Diamond for having a monopoly on comic distribution.
Digital is making this easier but I do not blame anyone for rather watch a TV show or movie of these characters.
Note, this is also why Manga sells better even in the US.
Bit rough to blame one woman in her late middle age. She can only censor so much in her free time.
Manga sells well because it's easy for people to get into.
Just start at Volume 1, no need to read anything else, and no confusing number rebooting or whatever.
That and Manga is a hell of a lot more value for your money then comics, floppies are fucking 4 bucks per issue.
This, comics are just too fucking vast and confusing for the average joe to get into, not to mention you can't normally buy them at regular stores, and have to go to a comic book shop which some cities might not have.
Because it's easy to get into, just start from volume 1 and boom, you're good to go, and they're sold at shit like Barnes and Nobles.
Manga doesn’t seem that much better, in terms of cost and length anyway. But maybe that’s because all the ones I wanted to start as a kid were so long-running.
You’re right
Idk why more money doesn’t get funneled into it. I think CN and Nick are locked hard behind trying to be super kid friendly, but they really need to be airing more teenage geared stuff in the after-school block. You’d think streaming would take care of this. Like why hasn’t Marvel produced a big budget avengers cartoon (maybe there is I just don’t know it) that runs on Hulu, Disney plus, or even ABC. DC was kinda doing it with Young Justice but since it wasn’t doing TTG numbers it got pushed digital
Not just marvel dc or Nick or cn just in general companies don't think animated action series are viable. Not all of them have to be mature dark or adult just the genre I'm general barely exists . There are a ton of action/fighting/super power anime that are terrible but at least there's a big pool to choose from.
Nah man, Manga is a much better deal then comics, both with price and length.
The average floppy is like 3-4 bucks and has around 24 pages.
Manga volumes has like 192 pages for 8-10 bucks.
True Manga is rarely in color, but there is still more value there.
Not to mention manga is sold in normal stores most people know off, unlike comics which are stuck in comic shops.
And the real kicker is if we just stick to marvel and DC they every often makes it so you have to buy other comics to get the full story, which is a lot of money.
