My issue is that writers take a "you can't understand the plight of poor people or sincerely care about helping them unless you are poor yourself" tone with the book far too often. It's a completely retarded take; people who aren't poor can grasp the issues facing poor people just fine, and unless you're talking to someone who is completely out of touch at worst they'll just be missing out on some of the nuances and subtle things.
