It probably would. LGBTQ+ representation in shows help shows grow in popularity quite fast.
Mao Mao has already lgbtq representation. It's just that is normal and the creators don't show it off on twitter.
Mao Mao is great, but it doesn't get talked about much because it's a genuinely good show for children and not for adults. It doesn't have an overarcing story, and it doesn't have a romance for shippers/tumblr types to latch onto, so it sadly gets left in the dust in terms of popularity. Furries do seem to enjoy it though, so maybe they'll keep the show floating

From where the story is going on so far, it seems like the show is leading to have a major story. Like how some shows have their first episodes loosely connected then gets more and more connected as the series goes on. Think SU.
