Kid fell off the moon

Dreamworks was a company built to spite Disney and their success. When the spite died off, and the success ran out, Dreamworks ran out of things to be.

They peaked at Shark Tale.

They had an amazing run in the late 00s
>Kung Fu Panda
>HTTYD
>Megamind

Their most recent good production was Kung Fu Panda 3. Since then it's been Boss Baby and Trolls.

>Rise of the Guardians was a huge flop in 2012
>Frozen and Despicable Me 2 happened in 2013
They've never recovered ever since. Their more successful film at the box office, Shrek 2, has long since been surpassed by Disney, Pixar and Illumination films from 2010 onwards.

Getting rid of Bibo Bergeron was their biggest mistake. Shark Tale remains their most soulful project to date, yet it's their only CG film directed by him. They should try getting more french animators to helm their films

You're not wrong there

>Katzenberg artificially inflates his budgets to "impress shareholders"
>Croods and sequels to HTTYD and KFP are the only Fox-distributed movies that made a profit
>Netflix shows using new IPs they bought are cheaper and safer to make
>The Universal buyout is the final nail in the coffin

DON'T SUMMON H-

Dammit.

Unironically this, which is tragic when you remember how terrible that movie is.

Shark Tale is an amateurish work of art, and its influence can still be felt today.

We’re getting old lads

We're never getting another piece of animation like Shark Tale ever again. The earth-shattering negative reception it got caused not only Dreamworks, but other studios as well, to take extra measures to avoid a situation like that from happening again. No studio wants to have their own Shark Tale. Like it or not, October 2004 was a turning point for the industry.

I guess the dream didn't work

Illumination has long since surpassed Dreamworks as the preferred popcorn animation studio among the general public. Turns out people enjoy humble and pleasant films like Despicable Me and Sing over pretentious and self indulgent stuff like HTTYD and Rise of the Guardians. It's because of this that Boss Baby was their only hit recently : It feels more like an Illumination film

So do you like have a word document just full of posts that you use to defend shark tale?

I have quite a bunch of made by myself gifs, as you all know by now.

As long as they keep rocking TV, I'll be satisfied.

I dunno if calling Shark Tale a failure that was so bad it reshaped the industry is defending it

Despicable Me happened. Universal saw who made more money, so now Dreamworks is the B-studio.

Illumination is a smarter company than Dreamworks. They learned from the latter's mistakes and didn't follow their bad bussiness practices

Shark Tale also changed the industry because it was also a big hit at the box office in spite of its negative reception. Before 2004 rolled around, the only Zig Forums films that did well commercially were the well received ones, while the ones that got negative reviews always flopped. ST changed this ( it even got an academy nomination on top of the 374 million box office )

Oh, and there's also the fact that Shark Tale was the film that brought an entire generation of traditional animators into the CG landscape. Katzenberg saw that hand drawn films were dying, so he assembled a huge team consisting of 2D animators to make ST. Whenever you see a film like Despicable Me, Zootopia or Spider Verse, there's a very chance that someone involved in it got their start on CG with ST
