TL;DR Rebecca Sugar mentioned that other countries would cut funding for her show if she made a gay wedding. She stood her ground and funding was cut, leading to the show abruptly ending. This has been used to excuse all the flaws in this show, to the point KiwiFarms has been running with it.
Personally, there’s a few holes in that story and I actually think she might be lying.

If other countries didn't wanted a gay wedding in the first place then they wouldn't approve the episode, every episode needs to get a green ligth from the sponsors and producers houses before it even gets animated.

Cn is a cable channel, those get packaged up and then sold to cable providers. They could complain/not renew their contracts but nothing else and what about the uk case, those got censored and not removed

I understand Rebecca's point, she fought for it and I respect that.
However, she had 5 seasons with ton of filler, because as much as it makes you seethe, 90% of the townie episodes were blandant filler, the only episodes worth watching were either Connie-heavy ones like Nightmare Hospital or anything with the Teen Gang because they are Steven's friends and their personalities play really nice onto each other.
Anything else, almost literally everything else was not worth watching, I do not care about Onion, I do not care about the Fry family, I do not care about the Pizza business or Smiley's old fuckbuddy, I specally do not care about Ronaldo, either give me more episodes like Joy Ride or just don't bother with it at all.
