The problem was incest is technically allowed under the “two adults who mutually consent” clause and people were trying to alleviate their disgust with social activism.

not sure if alleviate would be the right term-- it was more of a justification for threatening artists for something that made them, personally uncomfortable. even in art where they aren't mutually consenting, or aren't adults, at the end of the day it's pixels on a screen. People took it way too seriously--doublepines is an example of that.

Back in my day we'd just take it on homosexuals for corrupting youth, but now all our anger got channeled into incestfags and pedophiles.

The characters are based on real people so it's even more appealing.

some of her old art is archived on her art tumblr, limey-art, but i honestly don't think she posts her art that much anymore. Her main, bleventeeen, is still active though. She just posted this morning.

also, as far as her old blogs go, they've been locked with a password. she might unarchive them one day but honestly i'm feeling like she's trying to put her pinecest says behind her unfortunately

i'm totally here for it, maybe now that the fandom has died down there will be less death-threats directed at pinecest shippers

I looked up bleventeeen on Tumblr and to my shock there was only one callout post made about her and most of the replies were essentially telling OP to fuck off. You love to see it.

That's the thing. The whole pushback, while existent, was not as intense as it is now. Generally, things have become far more regressive than it used to be. People would ship characters that had good or interesting dynamics, even on Tumblr. Remember, one of Life With Derek's biggest ships on Tumblr was between the brother and sister main characters. It's not really like that anymore.

Pinecest was popular because the characters genuinely loved each other (in Hirsch's own words), and if you're a shipper, you look for that shit.

So, a mix of time and the character dynamics. You probably won't see a comparable ship anytime soon.

dipper didnt have a love interest unil relatively late in the show with pacifica. so for a thirsty shipper the options were mabel, wendy or bill cipher. wendy is unattractive to female shipper as she is too old for him and mainly characterised as a prize in s1. if gideon was hotter, or dipper had his own friend group, the incest would probably have been less omnipresent.

Unironically a creative work of passion that was shunned for its topic. The raw level of emotion in every piece, god I love when artists have connection to the porn they draw. The only other place you see it so blatantly is the homestuck /aco/ general. The art has real attachment to it somehow.

The death knell for incest on tumblr was that whole 'inappropriate content' policy change they did a few years ago, it led to incest art or shipping blogs getting outright banned.

i think that's a really interesting take. it was incest not just for the sake of incest, but because it made sense in the context of the content that people made. there really was so much emotion in the pinecest community, in fanart and fanfic. i feel like thats why the ship had so much appeal and got as popular as it did. like.... in other fandoms it feels like there's a huge taboo on incest, and people get into huge trouble for even mentioning it, but in gravity falls it was literally one of the most popular ships. although, maybe the ship was just a product of its time, with the whole "sinful ships" tumblr thing in 2012-2016

honestly you're probably right, it something is going to appeal to a teenage audience, there has to be some kind of romantic aspect. process of elimination, the only two characters that were interesting enough to draw a crowd were billdip and pinecest.
