Giving Sonic a voice and changing his design was a mistake, plus trying to have more ambitious and lore filled plots full of edgy shit. Adventure 1 showed some restraint, but Adventure 2's plot was pure autism ( especially towards the end ). Heroes went back to the roots with its simplistic plot.... only for the Shadow game to go back to the Adventure 2 autism and make it even worse.

Having a "fun, upbeat personality" doesn't make you a good character. Sonic is a bad character that desperately clings to outdated 90s stereotypes of what a "cool" person acts like and miserably fails to add any significant depth or subtlety to his characterisation. That makes him an objectively bad character, no matter how "fun" or "upbeat" you find him. Junk food is made of garbage, I don't deny this just because I like how it tastes. Sonic is a junk food character.
