Alan's power comes from the Starheart which is a vessel where the Guardians imprisoned a bunch of chaotic primeval magic. The Starheart crashed on earth and got fashioned into a lantern by a crazy guy, then was handed down the ages until Alan found it. When he channeled the power some of it stuck inside him which is why he could still regain it after Extant destroyed his ring in Zero Hour and that is also why Jade was born with innate Starheart powers which turn her green when she manifests.
