It works because you get the sense that it's laughing WITH the audience, not AT them. They don't dedicate entire episodes literally looking at the screen and calling the fans manbabies, they simply poke fun at stuff practically everyone agrees are stupid, petty gripes. And their jabs are easy to laugh off since in general it's a genuinely funny and well written show. It's just trying to have fun rather then being insecure and defending itself from the "haters".

Zig Forums tended to have pretty positive threads about the show when it was airing. It's the games everyone hated. Sonic Boom the game series is pretty universally agreed to be shit. The show was pure fucking kino though.
